    "Why do age gap relationships make people so angry? Why do queer ones make them even angrier?"

    This week we discuss the strengths, weaknesses, misconceptions, and moralism of gay and lesbian age gap relationships. Jane and Elaine relate the representation of such relationships in romantic drama films Carol (2015) and Call Me by Your Name (2017), to their own experiences as a couple. Both texts offer nuanced glimpses into the intimate lives of gay people and have a thing or two to say about Oedipus and Electra complexes. Despite their widespread acclaim upon release, these films have since been subjected to varying degrees of criticism, but is any of it really earned? Is prejudice towards people who do things differently earned? No. Not really, and we will tell you why.

Today we're looking at The Matrix and Fight Club, two anti-establishment films from 1999, the peak of Y2K anxiety and capitalist consumer disillusionment. Both of these films are notorious for being appropriated by conservatives and gender fascists, despite both having radical genderweird creators. Time to look at these films with fresh eyes. What if I told you that Fight Club was more "woke" than we've ever given it credit for? What if I told you that just reducing The Matrix to a trans allegory does it a disservice?

While both films are insightful looks into the industry's troubled history of on-screen LGBTQ+ representation, they have significant drawbacks, especially when put into the context of their times and their suggestions for where to go from here. Is Hollywood really able to provide the solution to the cultural damage it has inflicted? How important is on-screen representation in the 2020s anyway?

    "How much of our bodies and souls do we give up to be loved?"

    For Hedwig and Elvira, the heroines of John Cameron Mitchell's Hedwig and the Angry Inch and Rainer Werner Fassbinder's In a Year with 13 Moons, to be with the men they love means reluctantly undergoing gender reassignment surgery. While we may now think this premise problematic and deeply uncomfortable to consider, the tragedies and farces that follow Hedwig and Elvira's "mutilations" are very real, and very relevant to the cruel persecution of trans people today. So, how do we physically, emotionally, and psychologically "mutilate" ourselves to feel complete in a society that teaches us we are incomplete if we are not loved in certain socially sanctioned ways?

What do trans people today have in common with the "gayboys" and "onnabe" of 20th century Japan? Where is the line between gender identity and gender performance? Does it even really matter?
