Girl, Take the Lead!

By: Yolanda Canny
  • Summary

  • Each week we explore Womanhood and Leadership with the goal to question the status quo and challenge our thinking so we celebrate every woman as a leader. Our episodes will interview leaders in the field, meet authors, explore books on the subject, hear inspiring stories, or talk with organizations leading the charge for women to lead. We’ll look at the different topics from different generational perspectives as my daughters, a Millennial and a Gen Z, will join me, a Boomer, from time to time. We hope to make you laugh and leave inspired as you hear our voices on this very important topic.

  • 195. Jimmy Carter’s Enduring Legacy: Peace, Music, and Leadership
    Oct 16 2024

This month we’ve been talking about grief and this episode could be an example of anticipatory grief because we’re talking about Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States who recently on Oct 1 celebrated his 100th birthday.

Our hope is that you'll be inspired by this short Sound Bite episode.

There is a ton of things to admire about him – I recently shared some of them with some Millennials I know who said, "Wow, I had no idea" so we're taking the opportunity today to share some of my learning with you about this man.

    Topics Covered:

President Carter’s key accomplishments in and out of office

Why Jimmy Carter is the Rock ‘n Roll President

    Carter’s friendship with musicians

A marketing innovator when it came to campaign events

    His quotes about leadership

Here are 3 takeaways from our episode:

    1. Jimmy Carter certainly deserves to be called the Rock ‘n Roll president. He saw music as the one thing we all have in common no matter where live.

    2. Jimmy inspires us to have faith, do what we believe to be right, no matter how much others may see as ‘inappropriate’.

    3. While some will not look kindly on his time as President, he is an inspiring, decent human being. Thank you, Mr. President, for all you have done. I am already grieving our loss.

  • 194. From Grief to Enlightenment: Ellyn Katherine Shamalov on Healing, the 7 Life Lessons, and Manifestation
    Oct 10 2024
Ellyn Katherine Shamalov, Millennial, joins us to discuss a bit more about loss, grief, separation, self-acceptance, and manifestation. Ellyn is an Enlightenment Mentor, Quantum Healer, International Speaker, 2x Best-selling Author + Soul-care Coach specializing in the Akashic Records. In early 2023, Ellyn’s life was upended when her partner made the decision to take his life. From despair, grief, guilt, and anger, she found herself immersed in emotional struggles that tested her resolve like never before. Ellyn utilized her own Quantum Enlightenment System and illuminated years of anguish, despite the common belief of grief’s never-ending cycle. In this loss, she has been able to claim wisdom and enlightenment and continues to thrive in strength and empowerment. Ellyn’s goal is to support others as they embark on their journey by clearing any self-doubt, limiting beliefs, past traumas, and generational patterns. In doing so they will be able to transcend fear, express their authentic inner self, feel liberated and joyful, and step into the realm of living their most authentic expression of their sovereign self. Topics covered in the Episode: Quantum Enlightenment System Seven Life Lessons Separation & Grief & Forgiveness & Guilt Feedback & Triggering Manifestation = Recognition + Acceptance + Choice Law of Reflection Here are three takeaways from the episode: 1. Our reaction to life is not determined by what’s happening around us or to us, but rather what’s happening inside us. Everything is a mirror of us. 2. The Seven Life Lessons are: acceptance of change, the power of gratitude, embracing failure as a teacher, letting go of control, live authentically, the importance of connection, and finding meaning in adversity. These lessons can be applied to grief, leadership, or any other area of personal development. 3. Manifestation (Recognition + Acceptance + Choice) is about the law of reflection which is about consciously shaping our thoughts, beliefs, and actions to align with our goals. • 193. Grief Explored: Emotional Complexity, Healing, with Insights from David Kessler’s Finding Meaning and Other Experts We Love.
    Oct 2 2024
So we like to cover books and have guests on the show to talk about emotions so we can be better leaders and based on the number of listens, you like to explore those topics with us. And there’s one emotion we realized was suspiciously absent from our list. And that emotion was grief. As some of you know we recently lost the dog we’ve had the pleasure of loving and caring for, over the last 7 years, Caitlin. She was a very spicy 13 yo Frenchie and we are so grateful to her breeder who thought it would be great for her to live her later years with us. There were several things that the event of losing Cait, as we liked to call her, brought to the forefront as I went through the process of grieving. Here’s what we’ll cover in the episode so you can choose to listen or not and it’s okay if it’s not – grief is a complex and difficult topic, particularly if you’re going through something right now. Topics Covered: What is grief? And we’ll reference Brené Brown’s Atlas of the Heart for that. Is the grief of losing a pet different from losing a person we love? Can grief bring other losses to the forefront? Is the experience of grief different if it’s sudden rather than having the time to prepare? How do emotions around grief like guilt manifest themselves? What does the author, David Kessler, have to say about the Sixth Stage of Grief of finding meaning? What does the author, Victor Frankel, say about grief? Here are 3 takeaways from our episode: 1. Grief is deeply personal and complex: Grief isn't limited to the death of a loved one and can manifest through a wide range of emotions, often involving sadness, guilt, or anger. 2. Grieving a pet can bring up layered losses: The loss of a pet can trigger cumulative grief, where past losses reemerge and intensify the current experience. While society may not always acknowledge the depth of pet grief, it can be just as profound as grieving a loved one. Pets provide emotional support and companionship, making their absence felt in everyday life. 3. Finding meaning is a crucial part of healing: David Kessler's "Sixth Stage of Grief" teaches that healing goes beyond accepting loss; it's about discovering meaning in the aftermath. This process helps us honor the memory of what we've lost and find purpose in life again. Meaning is personal and can come from ongoing connections with loved ones, rituals, or reflecting on the lessons their lives offered.
