By: Luka Haeberle
  • Summary

  • Host Luka Haeberle discusses modern Peruvian history as well as Peru’s entanglement with the rest of the world. Episodes
  • Genoa and the Spanish empire: The Genoese republic and Iberian Genoese merchant communities
    Jul 11 2024

The Spanish empire was not solely built by Castilian and Aragonese people. This doesn't solely apply to the consolidation of royal authority in the Americas, as I explained in our last episode. Genoese merchants and financiers, as well as the republic of Genoa, were key participants in this early modern empire, and the presence of Genoese merchants in the Iberian peninsula even dates back to the Late Middle Ages. So I decided to dedicate an interview to their history. For this episode I interviewed Dr. Richard Ibarra, to whom I'm very thankful. He wrote his Ph.D. thesis on Genoese merchants in Seville and the Spanish Atlantic (1450-1650).

  • Racialization in the Iberian Peninsula and in the Spanish Empire: The cases of Castile and New Spain (mostly Mexico)
    Nov 13 2023

For this episode I reviewed María Elena Martínez’ Genealogical Fictions: Limpieza de Sangre, Religion, and Gender in Colonial Mexico as a starting point to discuss racialization in the Spanish Empire. More concretely, I explain a couple of key points regarding limpieza de sangre (blood purity) statutes and the colonial caste system. The conclusion consists of a couple of open questions – It’s an invitation for you to reflect on the topics of the episode by yourself!

P.S.: In minute 19, I said the colonization of the Americas wasn’t state-led. This isn’t exactly false, but what I meant was that the conquest wasn’t state-led.
