• Master Sommelier reviews '100 Point Wine'
    Jul 25 2024

Does '100 Points' mean a wine is "Perfect" and if so does that mean we are comparing that bottle against the worlds best?

After seeing one of Australia's best wine writers Erin Larkins review of 2022 The Standish 'Lamella' we knew we had to get our hands on it and see what a Master Sommelier thinks!

A little bit about Standish via Goodwood Cellars:

A 6th generation Barossan, Dan Standish established his eponymous winery in 1999 whilst still working as winemaker at Torbreck Vintners. His endeavour initially began around an ancient parcel of Shiraz owned and farmed by his father. All batches of fruit are fermented and matured individually then follows a strict selection in the winery that can see as much as 80% of the original blend discarded and sold off in bulk.

As with the finest producers in Europe only the finest material is sold under the Standish Wine Company label. Stylistically Dan's wines are as rich and profound as you would expect from Barossa Valley old vines but they have a satin texture and dreamy perfume that sets them far apart from his contemporaries. Here, dark fruits are encased in cocoa and earthy richness but with gentle spice, soil tone, asphalt and a stony minerality that gives the wines a beautiful dimension. These are special Australian wines!

  • VALUE in EXPENSIVE wines - In Conversation with Mount Mary
    Jul 11 2024

Mount Mary is listed amongst the elite of Australian wine such as Penfolds 'Grange' and Henschke 'Hill of Grace' so why does it cost $165 and the others start at $900? We asked Chief Winemaker Sam Middleton

"I wonder what would have happened if we followed their price structure"

After visiting his local wine shop Angus O'Loughlin asked Sam what his thought were when he sees Mount Mary wines marked up 100% BEFORE corkage

"We treat our mailing list like family, what people do out of that is their decision and their choice"

This episode we are lucky to have a vertical of 'Quintet' the "flagship" of the Mount Mary wines with stories being shared about each vintage and the personal and professional reason why Sam brought them into the studio:

    2012 Mount Mary 'Quintet'

    2014 Mount Mary 'Quintet'

    2017 Mount Mary 'Quintet'

    2021 Mount Mary 'Quintet'

  • "They are PERFECT" - Master Sommelier on Mount Mary
    Jun 27 2024

We've all heard about following in your father's footsteps but for Sam Middleton of Mount Mary Vineyard we wanted to know if expectation meant invitation

"There was probably never any doubt that I would end up doing what I'm doing now, wine was always a big part of my life"

Taking our conversation on the Journey through working at Gevrey-Chambertin and cutting his teeth at Coldstream Hills and Dominique Portet before returning to his families estate as Chief Winemaker

"Once you're back you're very unlikely to leave, you wanna try and get as many different experiences as possible"

Imposter Syndrome, stamping his mark on the label and the next generation of winemakers are all discussed while everyone enjoys a stunning

2015 Mount Mary Triolet. "It was a fantastic Yarra vintage, probably one of the best I've been involved in"

2021 Mount Mary Chardonnay "Great acid, great focus, great freshness, great drive but still have flavour and concentration and personality"

If you can enjoy a glass of MM alongside listening or watching this episode.

Raise a glass to Sam Middleton and bottoms up

    Cheers 🍷

  • Top 10 Australian Chardonnays future DECIDED!
    May 16 2024

Embarking his 20th vintage in Yarra Valley Toolangi winemaker Kaspar Hermann knows a thing or two about getting the best from a Chardonnay grape.

Marrying into a wine making family, and taking a viticulture course himself in his teens, wine is where he was destined to be and after vintages with Seville Estate, Rochford and Mount Mary, Toolangi came calling. Taking over the reigns from legendary winemakers Rick Kinzbrunner, Franco D'Anna, David Bicknell and Willy Lunn his first vintage in 2019 was made somewhat easier by starting during the harvest and the pressure of making calls about the canopy and crop being delayed until 2020.

In this episode of Got Somme: Master Sommelier Carlos Santos and wine lover Angus O'Loughlin talk about the Toolangi Takeover, the importance of 'F Block Chardonnay' and the world stage Kaspar dreams to take his wines.
