Living Off the Grid in the City Podcast. Communication services, such as telephone, internet and paid TV, are considered basic necessities in modern society. Communication can be one-way or two-way and is protected as a human right. However, some entities impose limits on these services, such as offering limited choices and charging for them. This can be immoral and criminal, as it limits access to a basic need. Communication technology has evolved rapidly in recent years, and it is necessary to be up-to-date to actively participate in society. Communication technologies and services are necessary for the economy and social life, and access to them should be a right for everyone, regardless of their economic situation. Although some programs offer discounts or free services to low-income people, these services are limited in many parts of the world. Communication services are expensive, but people are willing to pay for them because of their importance. There are several free communication options, which I will discuss in a future book.

Living Off the Grid in the City Podcast. This text addresses the issue of mandatory water and sewage services. Water service refers to the supply of drinking water for human consumption and other applications in a given area, through different methods such as pipes and vehicles. These services are provided by both public companies (called water supply company) and private companies (called water company). In some cases, these companies exercise abusive control over the population and communities they serve, similar to electric companies. Although the severity of the abuse can vary by area, it is considered problematic in most cases. Additionally, in many places around the world, including the United States, water services are provided by private, for-profit companies. In summary, concerns are raised about the control and abuse exercised by water service providers, whether public or private.

Living Off the Grid in the City Podcast. Electricity companies have the obligation to grow in size and finances to satisfy their investors and obtain positive profitability. To achieve this, they must increase their size and sell more energy. However, in their quest for growth, power companies often become lazy and wasteful, passing increased operating costs onto their customers. In addition, they push for more energy to be used, encouraging lower efficiency on the part of consumers, and demanding less diversity of energy sources. These practices are carried out through the influence of the electric company in laws, advertising and propaganda. Companies sometimes grow by purchasing smaller electric companies, when they cannot expand into newly developed areas; where another electric company or electric cooperative already exists.

Living Off the Grid in the City Podcast. It is common for local electric companies to be monopolies and have influence over public utility commission members. This allows them to have almost absolute control over the electricity supply and affect the economy of a wide area. Although you don't have many options to change providers, the company can disconnect you if you don't pay. Additionally, non-payment can lead to threatening notices from your landlord, city, county or state and even eviction. The power company often behaves arrogantly and abusively, knowing that customers have nowhere to turn. In addition, they have a large and well-paid staff, and have considerable economic, social and political support. They have managed to establish close relationships with the officials in charge of regulating their performance. In short, power companies have excessive power over communities and customers. Most electric utility companies are set up as monopolies, privately-owned, for-profit corporations. All these are, I believe, harmful for customers of the electric companies. Monopolies are known harmful entities due to runaway greed, power, and inefficiency. For profit corporations are known not to be optimal for basic and needed services, especially for the majority, the poor and low-income classes.
