  • OutKast: Andre 3000
    Jun 27 2023
From the outset, Outkast members Big Boi & Andre 3000, proved to be very talented artists. Still, it is doubtful that many who heard their debut album "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" fully understood they were listening to future legends. Andre 3000 in particular is now considered one of the greatest MC's ever. With each Outkast release he seemed to change, to grow, to transcend into a superstar equally respected by the mainstream and the most stringently devoted Hip-Hop fans.

In this short episode of "1 Jewel: 1 Verse" Willie & Mo discuss how Andre 3K may have gave us all an early hint of his other worldly transformation from star to an "Exterrestrial" superstar.

  • Nas- 1Jewel, 1 Verse
    Oct 18 2022
Welcome to another episode of "1 Jewel, 1 Verse". Where Hip-Hop Hidden Gems takes a deep dive into a special verse.

Who is the greatest rapper of all time? That is a question that has started many debates.
Everyone has an opinion, and many of these opinions clash. However there are a hand full of rappers who are sure to be in that conversation.

Nas is one of those names.

So how did the Hidden Gems crew sneak a song by Nasir Jones onto their podcast? It's pretty simple really. Have you heard the song "Last Words" before? Probably not. The track off of Nas' 1999 album Nastradamus has seemed to be forgotten in time, but deserves another look. It is a true example of a M.C. worthy of being considered the GOAT.

  • Chino XL
    Sep 14 2022
Not many, if any, straddle the line between obscurity and royalty like Chino XL. For many Chino is one of the best lyricist to ever touch a microphone. For others he is just the guy that Tupac dissed at the end of "Hit Em Up".

He is Hip-Hop's forgotten son. (Maybe)

He is also a Hip-Hop legend. (Definitely)

Hip-Hop Hidden Gems podcast is back with a full length episode, and it is action packed! Join TheMoJoKing & Willie Freeman as they discuss the thin line between success & "selling out". Following that discussion the focus turns onto the great and misunderstood Chino XL.

Some of the topics discussed include:

    - Chino's early life & how he transformed his pain into a strength.

    - His connections to New Jersey Hip-Hop royalty.

    - His controversial debut album "Here to Save You All".

    - The perfection within the chaos of "Kreep".

    - Chino being compared to Eminem

    - "Riiiot!". How did Chino XL & Ras Kass get together?

    - Tupac vs Chino XL. A FULL breakdown.

    - Chino's follow up album "I Told You So"

    - Is there a story within his album covers? Willie is convinced there is.

    - The biggest mistake of the 2nd album. And it is HUGE!

    - The absolute greatness of Chino XL!
And why he may need to be taken is small
    doses.

    - What is Chino XL doing today? Big things!

    - Chino's interaction with Hip-Hop Hidden Gems.

    - And of course the Hidden Gem song selection!

All of that and much more, including Rick Rubin, a comic book & a gerbil. Hip-Hop Hidden Gems is bringing it all!

  • 1 Jewel: 1 Verse - O.C. (Times Up)
    Jul 19 2022
Hip-Hop Hidden Gems returns to break down one of the best of 90's, O.C.'s "Times Up".

Although O.C. may not be a household name these days in the early 1990's he dropped an absolute classic. Times Up was, for many, the anthem of a hip-hop generation. This lyrical onslaught, combined with masterful production was a masterpiece. Times Up was a song dedicated to keeping the art of hip-hop real and honest. There was a battle going on for hip-hop's soul and O.C. used all of his talent to try to save it.

  • 1 Jewel: 1 verse - Chuck D (Public Enemy)
    Jul 4 2022
Hip-Hop Hidden Gems returns with a 1 Jewel: 1 Verse episode focuses on the Rhyme Animal himself, Public Enemy's front man Chuck D.

    P. E. will go down in the history books as one of the greatest bands in American history.
They taught a generation to Fight the Power & to Bring The Noise. Hip-Hop music as a whole was the sound of rebellion, but few went at it harder than these legends.
And now Willie and Mo remind us all of the power of The Rebel With Out A Pause.
