Inside/Outside: How AI Changes the Landscape for Assessment of Learning, Pt 1

  • Summary

  • Technology experts around the world are worried about the impact of AI, with some even warning of potential “human extinction” caused by the misuse of AI. One article even considered AI’s impact to that of a nuclear war.

This may be hyperbole to many people, but to the trained educator it becomes abundantly clear that without fundamental change education will be obliterated.

Consider this quote from the Harvard senior researcher Chris Dede where he says, “The trick about AI is that to get it, we need to change what we're educating people for because if you educate people for what AI does well, you're just preparing them to lose to AI.”

The key is to focus on skills. The key is to have students show you what they can do with what they learned. As Dede says, “This raises the bar on human performance.”
