  • Most Dangerous Bridge In America, I 10 Bridge Lake Charles LA
    Sep 13 2024

officially known as the WWII Memorial Bridge, the I-10 bridge over the Calcasieu River is unofficially known as a public menace. It looms over the river, defiantly standing against all odds. Literally. Built in 1952, the 64-year-old bridge has seen us go from no space program, to landing on the moon, to launching a global communications infrastructure. It’s older than John Malkovich, Hulk Hogan, and Cornel West. It was around before we had cell phones, personal computers, and just about everything else we take for granted in 2016. Heck, it’s even older than the McDonald’s Corporation and all of the Kardashians. It might still be standing, but we all know it’s not safe. In fact, if you Google “Calcasieu River Bridge sufficiency rating”, you’ll pull up a lot of hits related to an article from Travel and Leisure magazine that listed the I-10 bridge as one of the most unsafe in the nation. But the funny thing is that the article is from 2013. If you follow the data back to its source - the National Bridge Inventory Database - things are a little different now. They’re worse. Much worse. Back when the Travel and Leisure article went up, the NBI gave the Calcasieu River Bridge a sufficiency rating of 9.9%. Out of 100. If any of our kids brought home a test with a 9.9% score, we probably wouldn’t be very happy. I’m not sure why we’re okay with a bridge that over 72,000 cars cross every day having that low of a score. But wait! There’s more. According to the NBI today (March 2017), the bridge has a sufficiency rating of 6.6, which you can check out here. That's right, its official rating is 6.6% out of 100. If the bridge was an elementary school student, the only question it didn't get wrong on its test was writing its name on the Scantron. And even then, we're not entirely sure it managed to spell it right. This is all while the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development says not to worry. Everything’s fine. Those are just numbers, anyway. Nobody likes math, right? Just keep on using the bridge. It’s cool. Except it’s not. The NBI says the structurally deficient bridge is “basically intolerable, requiring high priority of corrective action”. Yeah, no duh. The deck is in Serious Condition The superstructure is in Serious Condition The substructure is in Serious Condition The bridge railings, despite the cool crossed flintlock pistols that adorn them, do not meet currently acceptable standards The transitions do not meet currently acceptable standards The approach guardrail does not meet currently acceptable standards The ends on the approach guardrails do meet currently acceptable standards, though. So there’s that. Was the bridge scary back in 2013? Yep. Is it even scarier now? YES! Is anything being done to prevent a national tragedy? No, not really. But don't worry! Did you know that there are over 140 deficient bridges in Calcasieu Parish alone? Forty of them are structurally deficient while another 102 are functionally obsolete, so at least the I-10 Bridge is in good company. I guess. And, while the I-10 bridge sits with a 6.6% sufficiency rating that continues to get worse, the 210 bridge is set to receive a multimillion dollar rehabilitation project any day now (although they keep pushing it back), even though it already has a sufficiency rating of nearly 74%. So there's that. There is a movement called In For 10 that has a petition you can go sign, along with the 1,661 other people who’ve bothered to click the button since the petition went live back in January 2016. Their goal is 10,000 signatures, which I guess will instantly deploy a crack squadron of magical bridge-healing fairies to get the ailing structure in tip-top shape when the goal is met. Or maybe it won’t do anything. I dunno, I’m not actually an authority on mythical bridge building creatures. While I applaud their efforts, it’s sad that the call to action falls on the people who depend upon the state to provide safe roadways.

Back-to-school season is upon us, and it's time to get back into the groove of early mornings, packed lunches, and homework assignments. Whether you're a parent, teacher, or student, establishing and maintaining routines can make the transition smoother and set the tone for a successful school year. Here are some practical tips and ideas to help everyone start the school year on the right foot. Why Routines Matter Routines provide structure and predictability, which can reduce anxiety and help everyone stay organized. For students, routines can foster independence and responsibility. For parents and teachers, they can streamline daily tasks and minimize last-minute scrambles. Routine Tips for Parents 1. Adjust Sleep Schedules Establishing a consistent bedtime and wake-up time at least two weeks before school starts can help children gradually readjust their sleep schedules. Adequate sleep is crucial for focus and overall well-being. Tip: Create a calming bedtime routine that includes activities like reading or listening to soft music to help children wind down. 2. Plan Meals Ahead Planning and prepping meals ahead of time can save parents from the morning rush and ensure that children have nutritious options. Tip: Involve your children in meal planning and preparation to teach them healthy eating habits and the importance of good nutrition. 3. Set Up a Family Calendar A family calendar that highlights important dates such as project deadlines, school events, and parent-teacher conferences can keep everyone informed and organized. Tip: Use color coding for different family members to make the calendar easy to read and follow. Routine Tips for Teachers 1. Create a First Week Schedule Developing a daily schedule for the first week of school that includes time for icebreakers, classroom rules review, and setting academic expectations can provide structure and familiarity for students. Tip: Incorporate fun activities like games or group projects to build classroom cohesion and make students feel comfortable. 2. Organize Materials and Supplies Having an organized classroom with clearly labeled materials and supplies can help students know where to find what they need and reduce downtime. Tip: Create supply stations for different activities (e.g., art supplies, writing materials) to streamline transitions between tasks. 3. Establish Classroom Routines Setting clear expectations for daily routines, such as morning check-ins, homework submission, and cleanup procedures, can help students understand what is expected of them and promote a productive learning environment. Tip: Use visual aids like charts and posters to remind students of the routines. Routine Tips for Students 1. Designate a Study Spot Creating a dedicated study area at home that is free from distractions can help students focus better on their homework and study time. Tip: Personalize the study spot with items like a comfortable chair, adequate lighting, and study supplies to make it inviting. 2. Set a Study Schedule Establishing a regular study schedule can help students manage their time effectively and stay on top of their assignments. Tip: Break down study sessions into manageable chunks with short breaks in between to maintain concentration and avoid burnout. 3. Use a Planner Encouraging students to use a planner to keep track of assignments, tests, and extracurricular activities can help them stay organized and prioritize their tasks. Tip: Choose a planner with both monthly and weekly views to provide an overview and detailed planning options. Implementing a Family or Classroom Calendar A shared calendar can be a powerful tool for staying organized and ensuring that everyone is on the same page. Whether it's a digital calendar or a physical one, make sure it is accessible to all family members or students. Tip: Regularly review and update the calendar to reflect any changes or new events. Conclusion Starting the school year with well-established routines can lead

But what makes pumpkin spice so irresistible? Let's explore its appeal and why it has captured the hearts (and taste buds) of so many. The Cultural Significance of Pumpkin Spice A Historical Perspective Pumpkin spice has deep roots in American history. Early settlers relied on pumpkins for their versatile and readily available nature, incorporating them into a variety of dishes. Over time, the flavor profile of pumpkin spice, which includes cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves, became closely associated with fall and the harvest season. Fall Symbolism In American and Canadian cultures, pumpkins symbolize autumn. They are prominently featured in seasonal decorations and celebrations like Halloween and Thanksgiving. The introduction of the Pumpkin Spice Latte by Starbucks in 2003 further solidified pumpkin spice as a fall staple, marking the unofficial start of the season for many. Popular Pumpkin Spice Products Pumpkin Spice Latte at Starbucks No discussion of pumpkin spice is complete without mentioning the iconic Pumpkin Spice Latte (PSL) at Starbucks. • Facebook Guilty of Censorship
    Sep 8 2024

A Parent’s Perspective: Facebook's Admission of Censorship and Its Impact on Democracy In recent revelations, Facebook has admitted to censoring information on its platform, sparking significant debate about the role of social media in shaping our society. As a parent, this issue hits close to home. The implications of this censorship and the broader influence of government and corporate power on social media platforms are profound, raising concerns about the future of our democracy and the information our children consume. The Reality of Censorship Facebook’s admission that it has been censoring certain types of information is more than just a headline; it’s a wake-up call for all of us. The platform’s actions have brought to light the extent to which social media giants can control and manipulate the flow of information. While the company’s stated goal is to curb misinformation and harmful content, the reality is that such control can easily cross the line into outright censorship. For parents, this raises a crucial question: How much of what our children see and learn online is being filtered, and who is making those decisions? Our children grow up in a digital age where social media is a primary source of news and information. The idea that this information is being selectively censored by corporate entities—or potentially influenced by government agendas—should be deeply concerning. Government and Corporate Influence The influence of both government and corporate interests on social media platforms can have far-reaching consequences for democracy. When powerful entities dictate what information is allowed to circulate, it undermines the fundamental principles of an informed electorate. Democracy thrives on the free exchange of ideas and information; when that exchange is controlled or manipulated, it threatens the very foundation of democratic engagement. Imbalance of Power: Social media companies, driven by profit motives and political pressures, can wield immense power over public discourse. This imbalance allows for the suppression of dissenting opinions and the amplification of certain narratives that align with their interests or those of their stakeholders. Echo Chambers and Misinformation: Censorship can inadvertently create echo chambers, where individuals are only exposed to viewpoints that reinforce their existing beliefs. This polarization can stifle healthy debate and lead to the spread of misinformation, as alternative perspectives are pushed to the fringes or silenced altogether. Lack of Transparency: The lack of transparency in how social media platforms enforce their policies makes it difficult for users to understand why certain content is censored. This opacity can erode trust and leave users questioning the legitimacy of the information they receive. The Impact on Our Children As a parent, the potential impact of social media censorship on our children’s understanding of the world is particularly troubling. Children and teenagers are in their formative years, developing their critical thinking skills and forming their worldviews. When their access to information is filtered or manipulated, it can distort their perceptions and limit their ability to engage with diverse perspectives. What Can We Do? Promote Media Literacy: Educating our children about media literacy is essential. Encourage them to critically evaluate the sources of information they encounter online and to seek out multiple viewpoints. By fostering critical thinking skills, we can help them navigate the complex landscape of social media more effectively. Encourage Open Dialogue: Create a space at home where open dialogue about current events and social media content is encouraged. Discuss the potential biases and agendas behind the information they see, and empower them to question and investigate further.
