  • The circumstances surrounding the death of Katelyn Kelley, 22, whose remains were discovered on the Menominee reservation this month, remains unclear, but advocates say the epidemic of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls needs to be immediately addressed by legislators.Kelley was reported missing from the reservation by her family to police on June 18, 2020.Her mother, Michelle Maureen, said her daughter was last seen near Silver Canoe Road walking on County VV toward Keshena the night of June 16 and a black SUV was seen parked outside her apartment in Shawano at about 3 a.m. June 17.Maureen and other family members spent months posting fliers around northeast Wisconsin and pleading with the public for help in finding Kelley, whose baby son needed her.
    Tribal police and other police departments said they conducted extensive searches for Kelley in the area where she had last been seen in the days following her disappearance.Menominee Nation Chairperson Joan Delabreau announced on July 22 a $5,000 reward for any information leading to Kelley being found.
