• LTL Quick Hits Volume 3: Talkin' about the PWHL with Cheryl Pounder
    Jul 31 2024

Welcome to another episode of Ladies Talkin’ Leafs Quick Hits! It’s Patio Season and we hope everyone is having a great summer!

In this instalment we revisit episode 5 from earlier this season where we welcomed former Olympian, as well as Hockey Analyst and Broadcaster Cheryl Pounder to discuss the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL) and the excitement surrounding its inaugural season. Cheryl highlighted several of the teams and players to watch out for, including players like Carla McLeod and Brianne Jenner from Ottawa, Alina Mueller from Boston, and Marie-Philippe Poulin from Montreal. She also mentioned the depth of talent in the league, with players coming from college and showcasing their skills. Cheryl was the perfect guest to have on to showcase the League for us, and after speaking with her, we could hardly wait for the PWHL season to start. A few months later, we now know that the league definitely came as advertised and we could not be happier with the visibility and growth that women's hockey has seen over this season. Next season is sure to be every bit as exciting and we encourage everyone to support the teams and watch the games.

We hope you enjoyed this Quick Hit. While its been a little quiet on the Leaf front of late, its almost time to prep for pre-season, We'll be back on August 7th with the latest from Leaf Land, and around the NHL. Hope you'll join us. Go Leafs Go!

  • How Do We Like the Leafs' New-Look?: A Supersized Review of the Draft and Free Agency with Mike Augello
    Jul 3 2024
This has been one exciting week for the NHL! Before the dust had even settled on an electric Stanley Cup win by the Florida Panthers, the league pivoted right to the NHL Awards, followed in quick succession by the Draft at Sphere and the opening of the Free Agency. For Leaf fans like us this also signalled an end to the lull in Leafs news, giving us lots to talk about in a jam packed show, our first of Patio Season! We start the conversation discussing the NHL draft and free agency, and touch on the moves made by the Maple Leafs. The draft at Sphere in Las Vegas was a real spectacle, giving us lots to discuss as we share our thoughts on the Leafs' draft picks. Then we turn our attention to the team's signings prior to the opening of free agency, including Max Domi, Timothy Liljegren, and Joseph Woll. For the Third Period, we welcome back our LTL Insider Mike Augello to break down the signings made by the Leafs during the opening hours of the NHL free agency period, getting Mike's insights on the team's moves in terms of goaltending, defense, and forward positions. We also discuss the signings and trades made by other teams in the Atlantic Division, as well as give our opinions on the winners and losers of free agency so far. To close the show, we sadly say goodbye to another former Leaf as we reflect on the passing of Sergei Berezin and share our memories of his time with the Team. Before we sign off, we have a programming note. As we enter the off-season and head to the Patio, we'll be moving to a monthly schedule until September. Look for our next episode August 7th, unless some big Leafs' news breaks, in which case we'll have you covered with a bonus episode. 'Til we meet again, enjoy the the sweet summer breezes, company of good friends, and a cool drink or two. Until next time cheers and Go Leafs Go! Takeaways The NHL draft took place at Sphere in Las Vegas, providing a visually stunning experience. The Toronto Maple Leafs' draft picks were met with mixed reactions, with some experts questioning the value of their selections. The Leafs re-signed a few key players, including Max Domi, Timothy Liljegren, and Joseph Woll. The contracts for these players were seen as reasonable given the current market. Durability is a concern for some of the players, but their abilities and potential make them valuable additions to the team. The Toronto Maple Leafs made several signings and trades during the NHL free agency period to address their goaltending, defense, and forward positions. The hosts believe that the Nashville Predators were the biggest winners of free agency, as they made significant additions to their roster, including Stephen Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault. The hosts discuss the signings and trades made by other teams in the Atlantic Division, including the Boston Bruins, Florida Panthers, and Ottawa Senators. They express their condolences for the passing of former Leafs player Sergey Berezin and highlight his contributions to the team during his time with the organization. • Is There Something Cookin' in Leaf Land? Talkin' Contracts, Marner and More
    Jun 19 2024
It's been almost eerily quiet in Leaf Land over the last few weeks, with only a few hushed exits and a hiring on the coaching front to speak of. With the Cup still up for grabs, and Gary's unwritten "No Announcements" rule, its probably to be expected (the Stanley Cup Final is still being contested as I write this). But, we cover the Toronto Maple Leafs though, which means there's never a shortage of ongoing off-season storylines to follow and discuss. In this episode we open the show touching on a variety of topics including the NHL salary cap increase, the Four Nations Face-Off tournament, and the upcoming NHL docu-series on Prime Video. Then in our next segment our conversation turns to--you guessed it--Leaf talk, where we cover the Leafs coaching changes, the status of some of the current player contract negotiations, and of course the uncertainty surrounding Mitch Marner. Next, the LTL Highlight Reel returns, celebrating a few of our favourite moments from the 2023-34 Leafs Season, including a milestone for the Captain, an incredible example of player resilience, and a couple of very memorable NHL events! We wrap up the show discussing the upcoming NHL draft and free agency, as well as potential players the Leafs could target. With the team in need of help at Centre and Defense, look for Treliving and Co, to bolster both positions through the draft and free agency. We also contemplate whether management will entertain any trades involving their first round pick, Marner or both! This is definitely the quiet before the storm for the Leafs, but we expect that once the Stanley Cup Champion is crowned we will be getting a tonne of news on the team. We'll be back on July 3rd from the Patio with our first official Off-season episode, where we're sure to have some thoughts on the fallout from the draft and free agency. 'Till next time, cheers and Go Leafs Go! Takeaways The NHL salary cap is increasing for the next season The Four Nations Face-Off tournament will replace next year's All-Star game The Leafs have made changes to their coaching staff Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi are UFAs and negotiations are ongoing There is uncertainty surrounding Mitch Marner's future with the Leafs The conversation ends with a highlight reel of memorable moments from the previous season The hosts discuss the captaincy of the Toronto Maple Leafs and express their desire for Auston Matthews to take over from John Tavares in the future. They highlight Ilya Samsonov's turnaround and impressive performance after being recalled. The hosts reflect on the NHL events involving the Leafs, including the Global Series in Sweden and the All-Star festivities in Toronto. They discuss potential draft picks for the Leafs and the need for defensive prospects. The hosts mention potential free agent targets for the Leafs, including Chandler Stevenson and Laurent Brossoit. They share their predictions for the Stanley Cup. But that doesn't mean there's a shortage of things to talk about when it comes to the Leafs! In this bonus Third Period instalment, we welcome back LTL Insider Mike Augello to discuss the Leafs latest playoff exit, and the fallout, as we head into another early off-season. • Gone Too Soon, Another Maple Leafs Postmortem: Will There Be Any Survivors?
    May 8 2024
In an all too familiar turn of events, another season is over too soon and it’s going to be another interesting summer for the Toronto Maple Leafs! For this Maple Leafs postmortem we reprise our Good, the Bad and the Ugly segment, and open by discussing how well the Leafs' defense performed as a whole, despite lacking big-name players. and how rookie Matthew Knies stood out with his tenacity and scoring. The team's home ice record however was a disappointment, with a lack of success at Scotiabank Arena, and the power play was a major weakness, with a lack of goals and missed opportunities. Unfortunately, results like this also yield some ugly moments, so we touch on the coaches' controversial post-game comments, with Sheldon Keefe suggesting that opposing teams set the team up to beat themselves and Jim Montgomery's comments about seeking advice from other coaches, namely Mike Babcock! Despite the disappointment, there were still standout performances. In a special edition of the LTL Playoff Highlight Reel, the Ladies revel in special moments from our rookie bulldog Matthew Knies, Auston Matthews' standout performance in Game 2, showing his skill and leadership, and William Nylander, continuing to demonstrate his playoff prowess. For the Third Period, with changes surely coming within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization, we discuss the future of the coaching staff and front office, upcoming free agents - who is staying and who may be going, as well as the possibility of passing the captaincy to Auston Matthews. To wrap we share comments from a couple of members of our Facebook community that really sum up how we are all feeling in the wake of this most recent playoff exit. Truer words were never spoken! It's back to our regular schedule, unless there is some big news from Leaf Land. They are the gift that keeps on giving, so whatever happens we'll have you covered. Till then, Go Leafs Go, now and forever!
