  • Episode 13 - Finale: Calling in the Village
    Mar 16 2023
In our final episode of season 1 we were joined by Racquel Washington, a reproductive justice birth worker, pre-homesteader, herbalist, and mama. Mama Nika and Racquel covered a lot of ground discussing the role of the village for parents (especially solo parents), children, partners, and every generation. Racquel mentions the book, The Spirit of Intimacy: Ancient Teachings in the Ways of Relationships by Sobonfu Some. It's one of our favorites and we highly recommend if you relate to anyone or anything! In this episode we cultivated the energy of "Calling in the Village" as we dialogued ourselves into realization that the ways that we relate to each other have to be remembered just as the ways that we relate to the Earth that sustains us. We are calling in that memory and those practices of devotion to relating.

If you are interested to connect further with Racquel you can find her and her work at https://www.queenscollectivebirthing.com/ where she shares her work with birth and death. You can follow along with her journey on IG @_thequeenscollectivebirthing.

Last thing to note: at the start of the episode Mama Nika noted that this was the final episode and we want to specify that this is the FINAL EPISODE OF SEASON 1. We will be back!!! Until then, please stay connected with us at https://www.thetribecoop.com/ and follow us @thetribelearningcoop on IG to get updates on events and offerings.

    Learn and be well.

  • Episode 12 - The Parent Test
    Mar 8 2023
Mama Kaiya and Mama Nika have a few things to say in response to a newish ABC show, The Parent Test, that chronicles 12 different families navigating curated challenges through 12 different parenting styles. While the show is centered around a competition aimed at finding the BEST parenting style, this conversation is brought to the Tribe in order to provide social commentary that is contextualized in history, race, class, and dreams for the future. This episode is not only a response to the show, but also a response to Tribe members who have brought this show and its concept to our attention. This conversation is just a start and there is much MUCH more to say. The quality of the audio for this episode is a bit glitchy and still the message rings loudly and clearly. Let us know what came up for you around this conversation and feel free to share if there is any particular parenting style that resonates with you and your family at this time and why!

  • Episode 8-How to Navigate Perfectionism
    Feb 8 2023
It deserves to be said that perfect is not the same as perfectionism. "Perfect" can be a repeatedly-attainable outcome in situations that have little nuance and meet certain specifications. Think about a puzzle and how every piece fits in exactly one correct spot in order to recreate the image.

Connecting a piece to another might have us considering this a perfect fit. It almost seems impossible, though, to keep this same line of logic flowing when considering something as nuanced as human behavior and how perfectionism impacts our actions or inactions. Even if our brains can understand that something being "perfect" is relative, we somehow still may end up trying to meet specific marks.

Whose marks are we trying to meet and what standards are we upholding in our pursuits? Hint: If you find yourself procrastinating, never being satisfied with your efforts, and feeling like there is a clear "right" way that is superior to other ways, you're likely perpetuating someone else's measurements and norm.

This is the foundation of perfectionism--being in a cycle of desiring outcomes that can never be achieved and that don't resonate with your unique likeness. Let that sink in...and then join us as we sit in council around how perfectionism can show up in our lives and reimagine how we can move through it with nourishing and resonant practices.

We at TLC all need this conversation and we are looking forward to learning with you!

  • Episode 7 - Bare Minimum: Boundaries Around Nudity
    Feb 1 2023
Mama Nika and Mama Kaiya take a vulnerable dive into their views about body literacy, consent and body boundaries.

This episode was adapted from a live Tribe Chat conversation around boundaries around nudity in family structures but we started getting at the roots and ended up covering SO much more. We suggested that this conversation might be repurposed at a later time. Surprise, surprise! It turned into this episode of Lifelong Learning. We invite listeners into the following questions while tuning in:

How can we create boundaries that are intelligent enough to be permeable in the direction that we choose...letting things go and keeping certain things in; keeping things on the outside from coming inside while allowing our essence to pour out when we desire?

How do we have to transform (or not) to be full in our authentic expression?

How do we give birth to our creations in our raw and primal glory without interference by an external gaze?

If anything lands or misses for you, please get in touch with us to share your perspective(s). We'd love to hear from you!
