• Football as trauma therapy/ The Bodyguard
    Jan 21 2024

David Smallwood has spent almost all his working life in  high-risk areas. First as a soldier, later in diplomacy, now in security were he at the moment is working with prevention of kidnapping and terror attempts. David grew up in Kirkby and started going to the boy’s pen and the Kop from a very young age, (he and David Fairclough have big smiles sharing fond memories from the Boy’s pen). But it was also where he learnt to toughen up. Liverpool FC is helping David do his job worldwide and also helping him process traumatic experiences from the conflict zones around the world. Enjoy this year’s first podcast as we travel the world with the show’s first proper bodyguard.

A clear onside goal was disallowed due to poor communication and the two red cards where questionable and so were several of the yellow cards Liverpool were bombarded with. Like the one Salah got just from winning back the ball… After the scandal match between Tottenham and Liverpool there is so much to debrief as this match needs to make changes to how VAR is being used and what to expect from the referees in Premier League. Ragnhild Lund Ansnes and Liverpool legend David Fairclough had The Athletic's James Pearce in for a closer look at the mess. They also talked through Liverpool’s group in Europa League, and why the tournament can benefit Liverpool. Enjoy!
