English Vinglish featured a winning performance from Sridevi, the massively adored superstar who was returning to the screen after a hiatus of 15 years. English Vinglish was the perfect marriage of material and movie star. Sridevi imbued the character of Shashi Godbole with genuine feeling. Through her sharp script, writer-director Gauri Shinde made strong observations about women and their tendency to allow others the power to make them feel inferior. The result is a feel-good film that frequently leaves you teary eyed and with a lump in your throat. It is a film so intrinsically connected to its protagonist and by virtue of that it’s leading lady, that the first thing that comes to mind when you think English Vinglish is Sridevi.
