• Free Birth: What your doctor and midwife want you to know.
    May 9 2026

In this powerful and thought-provoking episode of MamaDoc BabyDoc, we dive into one of the most polarizing topics in modern maternity care: free birth—the choice to give birth without a medical provider present.

Why are more women considering this path? We explore the real reasons behind the movement—ranging from prior birth trauma and mistrust in the healthcare system to a deep desire for autonomy, control, and a more intimate, undisturbed birth experience.

But this conversation doesn't stop at understanding. As physicians who care for women and babies every day, we also share what your OB/GYN and midwife genuinely want you to know. Not from a place of judgment—but from a place of safety, experience, and advocacy. We break down the medical realities, the risks that often go unspoken, and the critical moments in labor where having trained support can make all the difference.

This episode is about bridging the gap—between fear and trust, autonomy and safety, lived experience and medical insight.

Whether you're expecting, supporting someone who is, or simply curious about the evolving landscape of childbirth, this is a conversation you won't want to miss.

  • When the Labor Unit Closes: The Rural Maternity Crisis
    May 2 2026

Across the country, rural hospitals are closing their obstetric units—and for many families, that means traveling hours just to give birth. In this episode of MamaDoc BabyDoc, we take a closer look at the growing crisis of rural OB unit closures and what it means for access to care.

We break down why these closures are happening—from staffing shortages to financial pressures—and how they're creating "maternity deserts" where prenatal care, labor support, and emergency services are increasingly out of reach.

But this isn't just a systems issue—it's personal. We talk about the real risks for moms and babies when care is delayed, fragmented, or simply unavailable. What happens when labor starts miles from the nearest hospital? How does this affect outcomes, stress, and safety?

Whether you're a provider, a parent, or someone who cares about maternal health, this episode sheds light on a critical issue shaping the future of childbirth in America—and what needs to change.

  • Don't Just Stand There — A Partner's Guide to the Delivery Room
    Apr 5 2026

    Nobody briefs the partner.

They show up to the delivery room loving you completely, wanting desperately to help, and having absolutely no idea what their job is. So they hold your hand, try to look calm, and hope for the best.

This week, MamaDoc brings in a special guest: her husband Edson, a physician and father of seven. Together they pull back the curtain on what partners actually do during a labor that helps, what they do that doesn't, and what MamaDoc has personally watched PapaDoc do across three decades of marriage that she is now describing in front of an audience.

Edson gets to respond. It's fine. They have a strong marriage.

    In this episode:

    • Why calm on the outside IS the job — and why that's harder than it sounds
    • The ice chip principle (it's not really about the ice chips)
    • How to be your partner's advocate when she can't advocate for herself
    • What not to do — including the breakfast burrito incident (not Edson)
    • Why partners experience birth trauma too, and why nobody talks about it
    • What Edson would tell himself before birth number one

"You don't have to fix it. Just stay."

  • The Maternal Mortality Crisis
    Mar 28 2026

The United States is one of the most advanced countries in the world. So why are more mothers dying here than in any other high-income nation?

In this powerful episode of MamaDoc BabyDoc, we take a deep dive into the maternal mortality crisis in America. We break down the numbers, what they actually mean, and why (despite modern medicine) pregnancy and the postpartum period can still be dangerously unpredictable.

We explore the leading causes of maternal death, including hemorrhage, hypertensive disorders, cardiovascular disease and postpartum complications, and why 90% of these deaths are considered PREVENTABLE. We also talk about a critical reality many don't realize; the risk doesn't end at delivery. In fact, many deaths occur weeks to months postpartum, when moms often feel the most alone and unsupported.

This episode also tackles the disparities that cannot be ignored. Black, Native American and Alaska Native women face significantly higher risks, often due to systemic barriers, bias in healthcare, and unequal access to resources.

Beyond the data, we focus on what matters most. Awareness. We walk through warning signs every mother and family should know, including severe headaches, heavy bleeding, chest pain, shortness of breath and other signs of blood clots or stroke--because recognizing an emergency can save a life.

We also discuss what needs to change; better postpartum care, longer follow-up, mental health support, and listening to women when they say something isn't right.

This is an important, honest and life-saving conversation--for every mom, every family, and every provider.

Because bringing life into the world should not mean risking your own.

  • The Fourth Trimester
    Mar 22 2026

The fourth trimester is real, and it's intense. In this episode of MamaDoc BabyDoc we dive into what life actually looks like in those first twelve weeks after delivery, whether you've had a vaginal birth or a cesarean section.

We talk honestly about what your body is going through; bleeding, cramping, healing, and what recovery should (and shouldn't) feel like. We also cover the emotional side; mood swings, identity shifts, and postpartum mental health; because taking care of mom is just as important as caring for baby.

On the baby side, we break down what's normal in those early weeks; feeding (including breastfeeding challenges), sleep patterns (or lack thereof), weight changes and key developmental milestones.

Most importantly, we walk you through warning signs you should never ignore, like heavy bleeding, high blood pressure symptoms, headaches, or signs of blood clots, so you know when something may be more serious and require urgent care.

Whether you're preparing for postpartum life or currently in the thick of it, this episode is your guide to navigating the fourth trimester with confidence and support.
