  • The Underground Railroad helped enslaved people escape the chains of bondage. The Anti-Slavery Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania also helped those escaping the chains of bondage. When young enslaved person Maria Weems was sold to the slaveholder from hell she could think of nothing more than escaping as quickly as possible. Thanks to Charles Bigelow a Quaker Lawyer, William Still, and a college Professor named Dr. Howard Maria found Freedom.
