Alan was surprised when he got home to find Jimmy Fishburn sitting at his patio table. Jimmy explained why he took so long to come back. However, Alan wasn’t sure about accepting Jimmy’s excuse or whether to forgive him for what he thought could have been just another one of Jimmy’s mean tricks. For the first time, Jimmy called Alan by his name, and that made him remember what his mom said about the act of forgiving people who hurt others.

As much as he hated liverwurst, Alan tried to swallow down his sandwich so he could get to Ms. Ginny's and meet her grandson. He was happy when Mom gave in and decided to let him go. When he got to Ms. Ginny's, Alan was shocked when she and her grandson James came downstairs. It was at that moment Alan realized Ms. Ginny didn't know her grandson the way Alan knew him.

Uncle Gerald had an idea. He wanted to coach little league baseball, and he wanted Alan to accompany him back to the field across the street. He knew those kids needed a coach and wondered whether they might want him to help them. Alan wasn’t thrilled about going back to the field and was glad he didn’t have to because his mom announced that Ms. Ginny had called and wanted Alan to come over and meet her grandson. Alan looked forward to meeting a new friend and was happy he had at least one more day before he would have to make a decision about returning to the baseball field.
