There’s a reason Psalm 37:4 is so famous. I mean, who doesn’t want to hear about getting the desires of your heart? I think that’s amazing. Even when someone doesn’t understand the context or even the implications of this verse. I love even more that it doesn’t talk about duty or obedience (though those are important!). It says to delight yourself in the Lord. Have fun with Him. Don’t take yourself and all that is happening too seriously. DELIGHT yourself in Him. Then He will give you — with His own delight, I believe — the things you are longing for. What’s in your heart.

Sometimes, the Lord brings us to a place where our only hope is Him. Even though we try to avoid it at all costs and try to hedge our bets with lots of options, it’s a profound place where we meet our Father. I think of one of my favorite movies, Star Wars (really any and all Star Wars — I celebrate it all lol) where Princess Leia sends a message to Obi-Wan Kenobi that says, “You’re our only hope.” Where else could we go, Lord, as Peter proclaims. You are our only hope…isn’t that the best news? Our only hope is our best hope.

What does it mean, “The paths of the Lord are love and faithfulness”? (From today’s Psalm) First, it’s beautifully poetic. The beauty of walking along a path that’s actually made of love and faithfulness is amazing. But, beyond that, it’s assurance that when we follow the Lord we are walking a path that results in good. Not hate and turmoil, but love. Not straying and disappointment, but faithfulness. Those are the paths I want to follow. Lord, help me find them and walk down them always!

I love the end of Psalm 17 from today’s reading: “…when I awake, I shall be satisfied, beholding your likeness.” It reminds me of a favorite book title, “They Became What They Beheld.” The more I behold Jesus—the more I gaze on Him, think on Him, consider Him and His ways, the more like Him I will be. And that’s my goal…more of His kindness, goodness, faithfulness, compassion…and on and on. Let’s behold Jesus as we pray Morning Prayer today.

Oh, what a heritage we have as followers of Jesus. I love when we get to “feast days” in the church calendar because I get to learn a little bit more about a hero of our faith. When I first started praying the Daily Office, I hadn’t heard of most of the “Saints” that showed up on the calendar. So, before I would begin, I would look them up and read their stories. And wow. Such amazing, sacrificial lives of love and devotion to Jesus. You and I are part of that line. These are our family stories. May we always tell them—one generation to another! Make sure to read about one of our brothers today: St. Benedict.

A person has to be so enamored of someone else that they would write an epic poem to all their rules??!! Every time a selection from Psalm 119 comes up, I’m in awe, really, that David would write a love song to God’s law. He is so taken and captivated by the Lord that everything about Him and related to Him is on the table for praise and uplift. For worship. Listen to this Psalm today as you set aside 15 minutes as holy. A place, in time, to know the nearness of God. I believe it will change your day in ways we can’t comprehend.
