  • Episode 4 - Old Friends and New Journeys
    Aug 23 2023

Even though many of our initiatives are only a few years old, we owe a lot to the student leaders who took it upon themselves to find a niche for student-led initiatives, projects, and tools when the NAMS was first established.

In our fourth episode, we have the pleasure of chatting with la Dra. Michelle Disher and Dr. Alec Contag, the two founders of the Student Coalition when it was first developed in 2019. They formalized many of our goals and community training sessions we've provided over the years, and la Dra. Disher worked closely with la Dra. Pilar Ortega to develop the toolkit that the NAMS Student Coalition uses to train on membership on the importance of Medical Spanish Ambassadorship and Language Concordant care.

They provided some fantastic insight on how and why they got involved in these initiatives as Medical Students, how Medical Spanish has followed them during their Residency and Fellowship training, and their thoughts on the importance and power of language concordant care.

Since finishing Medical School at Case Western Reserve University SOM, Dr. Disher completed her Residency at North Colorado Family Medicine and is a current Emergency Medicine Fellow at St. Anthony North Family Medicine. Likewise, Dr. Contag finished Medical School at Oregon Health & Science University and his Residency at Scripps Family Medicine in Chula Vista, and is a current Sports Medicine Fellow at UC San Diego. The thoughts and opinion expressed by both of these physicians in this podcast are thier own.

  • Episodio 3 - Much Ado about POLOM
    Jun 14 2023

NAMS aims to formalize a plethora of projects to measure Spanish-language concordant care initiatives, and we’re very lucky that so many of the members of the NAMS National Board are happy and excited to share their work!

In our third episode, we chat with la Dra. Cristina Pérez-Cordón, a Language and Communications Specialist at the United Nations and founding member of NAMS, and with now Dr. Reniell Iñiguez, a first year Internal Medicine Resident at McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University (4th year medical student at the University of Illinois College of Human Medicine at the time of recording).

Disclaimer: Dr. Pérez-Cordón’s participation in this podcast episode should be considered her own professional contribution and thoughts as an expert in her field and does not represent the United Nations’ views or sponsorships.

They elaborate on their work in language equity in healthcare and research through the implementation of the POLOM (Physician Oral Language Observation Matrix) tool, which offers an improved approach in the development of learning programs with a focus on Medical Spanish in medical education.
