    Nemeth Narratives Season I: Everyone Has a Story to Tell

    The first season of Nemeth Narratives is a collection of stories from a diverse creative community of storytellers. Each podcast takes us through a delightful and insightful journey often punctuated with side trips to the fear and anxiety that often challenges many of us in moving forward toward our goals...our dreams...our successes. For some, it's the first they've shared. And it started with one thought...EVERYONE has a story.

    These sessions are in partnership between Nemeth Foundation, San Diego Filipino Cinema, New Americans Museum as well as the various communities of San Diego county.

    Salvador Ballano Flor - has been affiliated with the Educational Opportunity Program at San Diego State University for over 30 + years retiring in 2010 employed as a Counselor and served as Advisor to Andres Bonifacio Samahan, Filipino student organization, since 1975, Asian Pacific Student Alliance since 1996 and Pacific Islander Student Association since 1996. In this capacity, assisted in their annual High School Conferences, Samahan Filipino Culture Night and Filipino Graduation , APSA Fashion and Talent Show and PISA Annual Luau.

    Additionally, assisted in establishing the Filipino Collegiate Collaborative, a coalition of student organizations from local colleges including AB Samahan, KP from UCSD, FUSO from USD, CSUSM Kamalayan Alliance, Pagkakaisa from SWC, Miramar College FASA. These student organizations were encouraged to be involved with our Filipino Community via COPAO, FANHS, HOP, The Filipino School, NAFFAA Region 10, and FILAMEDA.

    His own journey of community involvement began with the The Bicol Club, Filipino Youth Alliance, Election of Officers at FAVA Hall, the Miss Philippines protest , Anti Martial Law demonstrations, the Pilipino Cultural Resource Center and attending Pilipino Peoples Far West Statewide Conventions, participating in two Bayani Challenge of Gawad Kalinga in the Philippines in Rio Tuba, Palawan in 2010 as well as in 2011 in Bantayan Island in Cebu.

    More recently, supporting the publication of The Bridge Generation Sons and Daughters of Filipino Pioneers by Dr. Dario DeGuzman Villa, Beyond the Mask by Professor Riz Oades, Filipinos in San Diego by Professors Judy Patacsil, Felix Tuyay and Rudy Guevarra Jr and Stories of Some Filipino Americans of San Diego by Simeon G. Silverio Jr. Currently involved with COPAO Leadership Academy and contributing to the FOSBE Exhibit and supporting the Filgrimage, The Filipino Story, and the San Diego Filipino Cinema.

    Although retired from his full time position, he continues working with college students as an Adjunct Counselor at San Diego City College and Cuyamaca Community College Counseling Offices.

    Felix Tuyay is a 73-year old second-generation Filipino American from a San Diego U.S. Navy family. He has been involved with the San Diego community for over 50 years. He received a B.A. Degree at San Diego State University (1973) and a M.A. at Goddard-Cambridge in Mass (1977). He taught Philippine and Filipino and U.S. History courses. He also taught at UCLA, USD, Mesa and Miramar Colleges. He is also one of the founding faculty at the Filipino School in San Diego.

    Prof. Tuyay co-authored the book "Filipinos in San Diego," featured in the KPBS documentary, "San Diego Historic Places, Filipino American Community" and contributed to the Filipinos of Southbay exhibit.

    Affiliations include Filipino American National Historic Society, Fil-Am Educator Association, Council of Pilipino American Organizations, and Gawad Kalinga (Building of homes in the Philippines).

  • Nemeth Narratives Season 2: Hidden Stories - Susanna Peredo Swap

    Susanna Peredo Swap is an award-winning producer, journalist, and film director with 25+ years of experience in arts administration, acting, jazz vocals, arts advocacy, and public relations. She serves on multiple boards, including the San Diego Museum Council, Women in Tourism & Hospitality International, San Diego Press Club, and advisory boards for Institute of Contemporary Art San Diego and Diversionary Theatre. Additionally, she co-leads Arts & Culture for World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 and advises UCSD-TV’s ARTS Channel. Susanna holds degrees and certificates in arts management, business, photography, and art history from SDSU, University of Maryland, USD, UCSD; the Royal National Theatre in London; La Sorbonne, and École du Louvre in Paris. At the San Diego International Airport Art Program, she curated over 80 exhibitions and managed a robust performing arts series for millions of yearly travelers. Her passion for the arts has led her to visit 16 countries and inspired her to found Vanguard Culture, a nonprofit dedicated to advancing San Diego's creative workforce and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration among the visual, performing and culinary arts.

  • Nemeth Narratives Season 2: Hidden Stories - Zeinabu Irene Davis
    Jul 11 2024

    Zeinabu irene Davis is an independent filmmaker and Professor of Communication at the University of California, San Diego. Her work is passionately concerned with the depiction of women of African descent. Her dramatic film entitled Compensation (1999) features two inter-related love stories offering a view of Black Deaf culture. New Yorker Magazine critic Richard Brody has named it as one of the best American independent films of the 20th century. Criterion and Janus Films will re-release the film in Fall 2024. She recently completed a dramatic short about a COVID-19 experience entitled Pandemic Bread, which has played at 8 festivals and earned nominations for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actress for Becca Godinez at the San Diego Film Awards 2024. She is working on a documentary, Stars of the Northern Sky, which tells the stories of abolitionists Sojourner Truth, Phyllis Wheatley, and Marie Joseph Angelique.
