  • A July like No Other: Mass-Student Uprising, July 2024, Bangladesh
    Jul 30 2024

In the very first podcast of Nuraldeen, Rumi Ahmed, Shafiq Rahman, Jyoti Rahman and Ehteshamul Haque discuss the bloody July student uprising in Bangladesh which has already claimed more than 200 lives officially and wounded thousands. The discussion begins with a short description of the background of the student movement, the escalation of violent reprisal and the total shutdown of the country by the regime to suffocate the movement. The discussants talk about the most surprising aspects of this movement, which is the spontaneous outburst from the Gen Z cohort in Bangladesh, often painted as the ‘I-hate-politics’ generation. They also discuss how this ongoing youth revolution has already overturned longstanding political and social narratives about the country. Finally, they speculate on the path this movement may take in the coming days.
