Fishing, smoking, sea and the art of filleting - a visit to The Connemara Smokehouse.

On a Summer's evening on the west coast of Ireland we meet Graham Roberts of, 'The Connemara Smokehouse', www.smokehouse.ie .

Graham is very passionate about what himself and the family produce in their unique business here on the coast of Connemara which focuses on the art of traditionally smoking Atlantic seafood for the last forty or so years.

We chat everything from his family history in the fishing industry, to what they have evolved their business into today. We follow the drying and smoking process right through, aswell as touching on the family's new venture into the on-site coffee business.

I really enjoyed visiting and chatting with Graham and I hope you, the listener enjoy listening.

Overlooking the valley of Slievenamon in the heart of the 'Golden Vale' , Nicholas Ryan farms tillage and beef alongside his father, James.

Join Nicholas and I as we take a walk around this lovely farm which abounds with beautiful old hedgerow trees which are home to many birds including the Barn Owl and we visit the site of the ruins of the medieval church and castle which are still visible today.

We hear about the system they operate on their mixed enterprise farm, the work Nicholas is involved in to promote biodiversity with the upcoming Clonmel Show and also get a glimpse into his business, 'Golden Vale Research' as well as hearing about his childhood on the family farm and where he ended up before he made the decision to return home.

  • Sowing Your Oats
    May 2 2024

Porridge, ploughing and sleeping on Bees!

On a rare sunny evening in a very challenging Spring I caught up with Kevin Scully in a field on the family farm as they ploughed in preparation for sowing their Oat crop.

Kevin and family grow and mill the only certified organic gluten free Oats in the country on their farm in the midlands of Ireland.

It was a pleasure to meet and chat to Kevin about their story, their wonderful products and the history of their farm. www.themerrymill.ie
