  • Beyond Bridgerton: The Real Lives of Upper Class Women in the Regency Era
    May 15 2024

Wondering what Penelope Featherington's life would have really been like as a "spinster?" What about newlywed Kate Bridgerton as a married woman? Or how about Lady Danbury as a widow? In our final episode of Beyond Bridgerton we speak with author and historian Charlotte Furness about the real lives of married, single and widowed women in upper class Britain during the Regency period and compare them to their Bridgerton counterparts. We explored what it really would have been like to look for husbands on the marriage mart, live an independent life like ambitious Eloise Bridgerton and how women lived through scandal and heartbreak in Georgian society. Through examples from her book Lady of the House: Elite 19th Century Women and Their Role in the English Country House, Charlotte chats with us about women in history who were instrumental in running estates such as Lampton Hall, Belvoir Castle and Shibden Hall and reality vs fiction of depictionsof these upperclass women in period dramas and historical fiction. Don't miss this exciting chat as we head into season 3 of Bridgerton!

  • REUPLOADED (better audio) Beyond Bridgerton: The Duke of Hastings and the Reality of Disability History
    Apr 21 2024

Whoopsie, we didn't realise we'd accidentally put a filter on that last episode! Here it is with clearer audio. Thanks for everyone's patience!

It's our second episode of Beyond Bridgerton, the interview series while we wait for season 3!

In our second episode, we interview Dr Zoe Chadwick, a medical historian on disability and deformity. We're going back to season one of Bridgerton, where we explore Simon's speech impediment and how he would have been treated by Regency society. In this eye opening interview, Zoe tells us about disabilities in the Georgian and Victorian period such as speech impediments, hearing impairment and physical deformities. We'll discuss Queen Charlotte and King George's mysterious disability, The Bowes-Lyons family from Netflix's the Crown, asylums, freak shows and the difference of treatment between the wealthy and the working class.

Zoe's reccomended books to explore disability throughout history:

Literature, Speech Disorders, and Disability: Talking Normal by Chris Eagle

Disability Histories by Michael Rembis and Susan Burch

A Brief History of Disability by Molly Seymour

The History of Medicine: A Very Short Introduction by William Bynum Fictions of Affliction: Physical Disability in Victorian Culture by Martha Stoddard Holmes
