    The 96th Academy Awards ceremony, which was presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), took place on March 10, 2024, at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles. During the gala, the AMPAS presented Academy Awards (commonly referred to as Oscars) in 23 categories honouring films released in 2023. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel hosted the show for the fourth time.

    The nominations were announced on January 23, 2024. Oppenheimer led with 13 nominations, followed by Poor Things and Killers of the Flower Moon with 11 and 10, respectively.[5][6][7] Oppenheimer won a leading seven awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.

    Other major winners were Poor Things with four awards and The Zone of Interest with two. The films which went home with one award each include American Fiction, Anatomy of a Fall, Barbie, The Boy and the Heron, Godzilla Minus One, The Holdovers, The Last Repair Shop, 20 Days in Mariupol, War Is Over! Inspired by the Music of John and Yoko, and The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar. The telecast drew 19.5 million viewers in the United States, becoming the most watched awards show since 2020.

    American Fiction is a 2023 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Cord Jefferson in his feature directorial debut. Based on the 2001 novel Erasure by Percival Everett, it follows a frustrated novelist-professor who writes an outlandish satire of stereotypical "Black" books, only for it to be mistaken for serious literature by the liberal elite and published to high sales and critical praise.

    It stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, John Ortiz, Erika Alexander, Leslie Uggams, Adam Brody and Keith David.

    It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 8, 2023, where it won the People's Choice Award. It received a limited theatrical release by Amazon MGM Studios on December 15, 2023, with an expansion on December 22, 2023.

    The Zone of Interest is a 2023 historical drama film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, co-produced between the United Kingdom and Poland. The story is loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, itself based partially on real events. It stars Christian Friedel and Sandra Hüller as Nazi commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig, who live with their family in a home in the "Zone of Interest" next to the Auschwitz concentration camp.

    The Zone of Interest premiered at the 76th Cannes Film Festival on 19 May 2023 to critical acclaim. It won the Grand Prix and FIPRESCI Prize and was named one of the top five international films of 2023 by the National Board of Review. It won three BAFTAs, including Best Film Not in the English Language, and was nominated for three Golden Globe Awards. At the 96th Academy Awards, where it received five nominations, it won Best International Feature and Best Sound.
