The autopsy of Michigan football’s kneecapping loss to arch-rival Michigan State began in the underbelly of Spartan Stadium and spewed into Schembechler Hall, where players and coaches spent the week dissecting their mistakes and assuring the media their season wasn’t over.

If the Wolverines could win their remaining four games, the possibility of reaching the Big ten title game remained.

Such was the mindset when Jim Harbaugh’s club returned to Michigan Stadium to face an Indiana team on the other end of the spectrum, desperately searching for its first conference win. The stage was set for a confidence-restoring beatdown.

But as the Wolverines controlled what they could during a thorough 29-7 win over the Hoosiers, one of the things beyond their purview reared its ugly head. For four quarters Saturday, a stream of Michigan players flooded in and out of the medical tent along the sideline as injuries ravaged Harbaugh’s team for the first time all season.
