In this episode we talk with Dr. Junlei Li, the Co-Chair of the Human Development and Education Program and the Saul Zaentz Senior Lecturer in Early Childhood Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. As a developmental psychologist, Dr. Li’s research and practice focus on understanding and supporting the work of helpers – those who serve children and families on the frontlines of education and social services. He says, “I think they are the ultimate people who link developmental science to practice in order to make a real difference...I studied and learned from children’s “helpers” across a wide range of developmental settings with low resources but high-quality practices, including orphanages, childcare, classrooms, and community youth programs.”

From that work, Dr. Li and his colleagues developed the “Simple Interactions” approach (www.simpleinteractions.org) to help identify what ordinary people do extraordinarily well with children in everyday moments and made that the basis for promoting positive system change.

In this episode we have the honor of hosting our first teachers - the two women whose waters we swam in, who’ve had the highest expectations for each of us, and have relentlessly modeled both strength and vulnerability in different ways throughout our lives: our moms. You’ll get to learn about our origins emotionally, spiritually and philosophically. *Potential trigger alert - corporal punishment did come up. We think it was a pretty low key discussion but wanted to at least let you know it’s in there!*

Lauren’s mom, Bets Parsons grew up in a large family with seven siblings, lots of cousins, huge family gatherings, and this childhood informed her future. She graduated high school in the small town of Granby, MA, and over the years, she married & divorced, graduated college four times (AS management, AS computers, BS business, MS communication), raised one wonderfully beautiful intelligent daughter, provided “auntie-ness” to over 40 niblings, volunteered in many ways most memorably in Girl Scouting for over 20 years, and had a very fulfilling and challenging career in the world of information technology for various large insurance corporations.

Angela’s mom, Ballola Garcia grew up in the borderland of El Paso, TX. and Juarez, MX. She spent her childhood and young adult life playing in both places. She started her professional life as a business woman and has since received a MA in early childhood education. She is a first grade teacher, a mother, a wife, a sister, a believer, an aunt, and a friend to many. She spends her days reading and studying, taking care of her babies, and her perritos (puppies).
