    Kalpana Lajmi (1954-2018) was an Indian film director, producer, screenwriter. Independent filmmaker Lajmi specialized in making realistic and low-budget films, known in India as parallel cinema. She tended to make films that focused on women. She was a longtime manager for Bhupen Hazarika. On 23 September 2018, she died at the age of 64 after being diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2017. She was the daughter of painter Lalita Lajmi and Navy Captain Gopi Lajmi. She was the niece of filmmaker Guru Dutt, and she debuted as an assistant director under Shyam Benegal, an older relative of the Padukone family. Later, she worked as an assistant costume designer on Shyam Benegal's Bhumika: The Role. During that time, she made her directorial debut with the documentary film D.G. The Movie Pioneer in 1978 and directed more documentaries like A Work Study in Tea Plucking (1979) and Along the Brahmaputra (1981). Her first feature film, Ek Pal (A Moment), starred Shabana Azmi, Naseeruddin Shah, and Farooq Sheikh.     The Indian film producer, screenwriter, and director Kiran Rao (born 7 November 1973) works primarily in Hindi cinema. Rao founded the non-profit Paani Foundation in 2016, whose mission is to fight drought in Maharashtra.

    She started her career as an assistant director on the epic film Lagaan directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, with whom she also assisted on Swades: We, the People. In the foreign language film category, Lagaan was nominated for the 74th Academy Awards. The film was produced and starred by Aamir Khan. Before Lagaan, she was also seen in Dil Chahta Hai in a supporting role. Also, she was a second assistant director on the indie hit Monsoon Wedding under Oscar-nominated director Mira Nair.
