Schmooze with Suze

By: Suzie Becker
  • Summary

  • Hi, I’m Suze. Here with your dose of culture, values and global citizenship- and where we tackle those topics others may consider off-limits.

A little about me, I’m a busy GenX mom who, quite frankly, wanted to grow up like the Brady Bunch… But ended up being raised in the shadow of Schindler’s List. So this means I’ve spent a lifetime navigating these mixed messages we get hit with daily. You know those conversations- where we wonder if it’s safe to speak our minds? Can we share our experiences? Voice our fears and concerns, or should we just keep our mouths shut?

Well, too bad. I need to know! But I’m no expert. So, I’m going to schmooze the experts and get their thoughts. Why? So when we engage with our kids, colleagues, or the countless committees we interact with, we can do it with competence, kindness, confidence, and maybe a bit of humor.

If this sounds like your cup of coffee- welcome to Schmooze with Suze!

  • How Can We Provide The Base of The Pyramid With Dignity? My Guest: Colleen Rodriguez, Executive Director of LJD- JFCS Jacksonville
    Sep 27 2024

After two years, and five seasons, I can finally say, let's follow up.

I share an intimate conversation with Colleen Rodriguez, Executive Director of the LJD Jewish Family and Community Services of Jacksonville- my first guest from my first episode. We tackle the topics we touched on then, that still trigger both of us today and reflect on the evolution of community support over the past 35 years, particularly focusing on where the greatest needs still require our attention- at the base of Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs: Food, Shelter and Security.

Colleen shares alarming statistics, revealing that the MaxBlock Food Pantry had an unsettling surge from 170,000 to 239,000 meals annually, which signifies the harsh realities of food insecurity. We discuss how the organization has adapted its services to meet diverse needs—from the homeless to those living in temporary housing—by tailoring food offerings.

The conversation shifts to affordable housing challenges, emphasizing the struggles of working families. Colleen details the Eviction Diversion program where we meet hardworking individuals suddenly thrust into challenging situations. This episode sheds light on how in some cases, it would not matter if a vehicle repair is made or not- the cost could lead to an almost guaranteed life of homelessness that can't be recovered from.

We also touch on the importance of mental health resources, noting recent advancements in awareness and funding, yet acknowledging ongoing capacity issues. We emphasize the holistic, supportive environment at JFCS designed to break down barriers to mental health resources, ensuring that those in crisis find timely and compassionate help.

Overall, the episode underscores the interconnectedness of food security, housing, and mental health, and the crucial role of community support in addressing these challenges. You can't heal what you don't feel... and we are grateful that Colleen and her team feel strongly, react quickly and support avidly.

The LJD Jewish Family & Community Services (JFCS) has been invested in the success of Northeast Florida since 1917, strengthening the entire community through services that aid people of all ages, races, religions, sexual orientations and backgrounds. While our quality programs may be diverse, they are unified by our guiding mission: to help people help themselves.

No person shall, on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, or disability be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to unlawful discrimination under any program or activity receiving or benefiting from federal financial assistance and administered by JFCS. JFCS will ensure that reasonable accommodations will be made for those persons needing special assistance to access our programs and services, and for those persons who are deaf or hard of hearing.

  • Can Embracing Our Unique Beauty Enhance Our Aging Journey? My Guest: Audrey Colman
    Sep 8 2024

What if the secret to aging gracefully lies not in drastic measures, but in understanding and embracing the nuances of your unique beauty? This episode opens a candid dialogue about my own experiences with aesthetic enhancements and the pivotal role that informed choices and consultations play in achieving harmonious results. My transformative experience with Audrey, our guest expert who masterfully blends science and artistry in her practice, underscores the importance of individualized treatment plans that honor each person's natural beauty.

Audrey and I delve into the empowering potential of education in the realm of aesthetics. We emphasize the significance of personalized care and patient understanding, debunking common horror stories and misconceptions about beauty treatments.

In another compelling segment, we explore the complexities and expectations surrounding non-surgical facelifts and volume restoration. With Audrey's expertise, we highlight the shift away from one-size-fits-all solutions and the importance of strategic volume placement to maintain natural proportions and feminine features. This episode is a call to action for transparency and empowerment in the world of aesthetics—a plea for a community where women can trust and lift each other up on their journeys to aging gracefully.
