Second Chance: voices of the unheard

By: Omar DeJesus
  • Summary

  • Facing 25 years to life in prison, I had to make a difficult choice, which was taking a plea of 13 years in prison—using my time wisely; earning a degree from New York University (PEP). I interview formerly incarcerated men and women, guilty or innocent, being granted a second chance at freedom. The lack of education is linked to mass incarceration. Also, I will touch on topics that will enlighten you. Here's a fact- the USA is the leading country on mass incarceration, putting a value on our citizens for monetary gains and disbanding people from their civil liberties.

Human trafficking, also called trafficking in persons, has no place in our world. As both a grave crime and a human rights abuse, it compromises national and economic security, undermines the rule of law, and harms the well-being of individuals and communities everywhere, especially marginalized communities. It is a crime of exploitation. Trafficking profit at the expense of the victims by compelling them to perform labor or to engage in commercial sex in every region of the United States and around the world. With an estimate of 27.6 million victims worldwide at any given time, human traffickers prey on people of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities, exploiting them for their own profit.
