Shema (Hear) | Byron Wicker | Mooresville

  • Summary

  • In Mark 12:28-34, Jesus quoted the Shema, one of only two prayers specifically commanded in the Old Testament (Deuteronomy 6:4-9). The first word of the Shema is "Hear." In Hebrew, "Shema" means hearing, understanding, and obeying. When the prayer begins with "Hear, O Israel," it calls us to attentiveness and action. The Holy Spirit seeks those who, like Elijah, will bend to hear the gentle blowing: His still, small voice amid mane competing voices (1 Kings 19:11-12).
