Hollywood has been terrifying audiences for decades with horror and thriller films ranging from Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds to the 2013 paranormal movie The Conjuring. But what’s even more frightening than these Hollywood movies is that a variety of real-life crimes and events were the actual inspiration for many filmmakers and screenwriters of this genre. One such film was Bryan Bertino’s 2008 film The Strangers, which starred Scott Speedman and Liv Tyler, that recounted a story of a terrifying home invasion. The film was inspired by real-life crimes, which included the murders committed by the Mason Family and the 1981 Keddie Cabin Murders, in which four people were killed by unknown assailants in a Northern California resort town. What occurred in Cabin 28 instantly became one of the most morbid scenes in modern American crime history — and has come to be known as the Keddie Murders. To this day the crime remains unsolved. So, what really happened and who were the killers.
