  • A Barrage of Dumb Rules Across Sports
    Jul 9 2024

We're in the dog days of summer. That means we're wondering whether the members of Team USA can spin a basketball on their fingers and trying to fool coworkers with a fictitious shark petting zoo in honor of Shark Week.

It's also a great time to look at the dumber rules of different sports and offer various ways to improve them. This strategy probably won't work, but the first step to affecting change is to speak it into existence.

  • The Mets’ Multiple Deferred Bobby Bonilla Contracts R Fiscally Dumb
    Jul 2 2024

Bobby Bonilla last played in the MLB in 2001. The New York Mets continue to pay him about $1.2 million every July 1, which they will continue to do until 2035 when Bonilla is 72 years old. It’s the wildest contract in all of pro sports.

Plus, a look at the California state income tax and why Shohei Ohtani is deferring the majority of his contract until after it ends. And the NBA Draft happened! Did you watch? We sort of did, but that second round being at 3 pm local time sure didn’t help. Sean’s mantra for Bronny James is “tough road ahead.”

  • The NBA Draft Being Two Days Is Time-Consumingly Dumb
    Jun 25 2024

The NBA Draft is this week! It’s always been one night for both rounds, but this year, the league is mixing it up with TWO days of the draft. The second day starts at 4 pm ET, which is very early.

Plus, our favorite draft cliches and how silly it is that players have to wear the hat of the team that drafted them, even if they’ve already been traded. Oh, and how about Monty Williams making $78 million to win 14 games and then being fired after one season? Brilliant move, truly. But not as brilliant as this Joe Dumars pass or this Javale McGee blooper.

  • Sports TV Media Rights R Capitalistically Dumb
    Jun 18 2024

When we recorded this, the Dallas Mavericks had just won their last game to stay alive in the NBA Finals. We know that good luck did not continue for Sean—congrats to the Boston Celtics on an NBA-record 18th championship.

Anyway, it looks like TNT is going to lose its media rights to broadcast NBA games. And that's not the only TV snafu going on. Have you ever tried to watch a more obscure game? It's rough! Sean's just trying to catch Switzerland vs. Hungary, and Joey's just trying to make jokes like how can they be Hungary when they're right by Turkey and Greece?

  • "Must-Win" Games Early in Series and Sources Leaking Clickbait Stories R Both Overzealously Dumb
    Jun 11 2024

When we recorded this, the Mavericks and Celtics had only played one game. Lots of chatter said Game 2 was a must-win. Well, the Mavericks didn't win it, so...guess we can all go home?

On top of that, reporters are dropping news from sources at wild times, such as the Lakers non-story about maybe signing Dan Hurley (spoiler: that didn't happen) during the NBA Finals and the USA Women's roster being announced after the "breaking news" that Caitlin Clark wasn't on it. Sean wonders what these sources get out of saying things.

Plus, Sean might start a new fast food fries ranking and we wax poetic about AIM away messages.

We also want to give a nod to The Underdog Newsletter from Joker Mag! It's a delightful look at the less popular sports stories, highlighting people who beat the odds to succeed in their respective sports. Plus, there's a challenging trivia question every time! • Complaints About Cakewalk Paths to Championships R Bemoaningly Dumb
    Jun 4 2024

The Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks are in the NBA Finals. Congrats to them! Yet, if you listened to some fans, you'd think the Celtics didn't deserve to be here because the teams they faced had key players who were injured. Okay...that's a reward for finishing with the best record of any team during the regular season.

Plus, Sean is now in his late 30s—what has he learned along the way? How many different types of cakes has he had during his birthday week? And we wrap up with a deep dive into a song that's nearly 20 years old.

  • Hyped Up NFL Schedule Releases R Try-Hard Dumb
    May 28 2024

Sean is old, and he is FEELING it. And Joey is out of the country! So, we recorded this one well in advance about a topic that was new at the time: the release of the NFL schedule. And the hype around said schedule—four months in advance, no less!—is out of control.

How would Sean have announced things if he were in charge? We’re going through the Cowboys schedule one game at a time to find out.

  • Sad Sports Memories Living Rent Free In Our Heads R Reminiscently Dumb
    May 21 2024

A little while ago, Joey randomly thought about losing a close basketball game in high school after he hit a game-tying shot. That triggered a drastic ice hockey sad story from Sean. And, of course, there are plenty of pro sports moments that don’t turn out the way we want.

These events happened so long ago! Why do disappointing sports memories from the past routinely haunt our dreams?

Plus, a look at the opposing teams that have made Sean cry over the years. Bring the tissues for this one!
