  • Baby Formula Shortage: A Parents' Nightmare

    This year, the US is experiencing a major baby and toddler shortage caused by supply chain problems and a major recall by a formula company, Abbot Nutrition.

    Back in February, Abbot Nutrition, a top producer of baby formula, shut down operations when four babies were hospitalized after consuming baby formula. While the one factory shut down and halted formula production, it spurred a nationwide crisis because it produces half of Abbot Nutrition formula supply; which is the largest in the US.

    Four corporations control the baby formula industry, from Abbott to Reckitt, Nestlé and Perrigo.

    Today we hear from one parent who has personally been affected by this crisis. Having a baby with allergies, she can only buy a certain kind of formula or her child will be seriously ill.

    The people of Hargeisa are left picking up the remains of the market, which was the source of their income and livelihood. Somaliland resident, Khalid Abdi says the people of Somalia are resilient. They’re now "selling fruits and plastic toys" in a burned market where they used to gather every year as a community for Iftars in Ramadan.
