  • Why does Agathon ask Socrates to lie down next to him?
    Jul 16 2024

Members explore the question of Agathon's relationship with Socrates as an avenue for understanding Plato's Symposium. This opens up several questions about the nature of dialogue in general as well as this specific dialogue as a means for arriving at the meaning of love in relation to wisdom. Along the way, we have some fun as well and discuss a variety of topics at the intersection of human relationships, psychological dispositions, cognitive training, illumination, transparency, and why the French seem to be so interested in eros.

  • What is the Socratic Method? Discussion, Dialectic, Philosophy as a Way of Life
    Jul 1 2024

Herein we discuss the nature of philosophy through the lens of the Socratic method as a vehicle to truth, knowledge, and understanding. The Socratic method becomes the primary, the best, and pedagogical way for arriving at truth and is, arguably, necessary to an understanding of all subjects. We situate this discussion in the nature of education and what it has become in the American school system. It serves, in part, as a critique and a call to take up the Socratic method, which we briefly describe.
