  • Hope Jahren Expands on Mark Twain
    Jul 18 2024
Every so often, a new author tackles the work of expanding a classic novel to expand its reach. Even more rarely, they succeed beautifully. This week’s book, Adventures of Mary Jane is just such a rare gem. Mary Jane's author, Hope Jahren, is a scientist (a geochemist, no less) who decided to write the story of Mary Jane, a character that haunted her from the pages of Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn her entire life. It is both a magical adventure story and an authentic and well written coming of age drama. This week’s bookstore is Where the Sidewalk Ends, which is also run by two generations in tandem. We talk to them about how they do it…and we commiserate on working with daughters and parents. Join us. Books mentioned in this week's episode: Adventures of Mary Jane by Hope Jahren Lab Girl by Hope Jahren The Story of More: How We Got to Climate Change and Where to Go from Here by Hope Jahren The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain Uncle Tom’s Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe Les Misérables by Victor Hugo Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens A Man without a Country by Kurt Vonnegut Where the Sidewalk Ends by Shel Silverstein Good Night, Irene by Luis Alberto Urrea Elephant Company: The Inspiring Story of an Unlikely Hero and the Animals that Helped him Save Lives in World War II by Vicki Constantine Croke The Lost Boy of Santa Chionia by Juliet Grames-RELEASES 7/23/2024 More or Less Maddy by Lisa Genova-RELEASES 1/14/2025 Learn more about your ad choices. Podcast is almost better than the books!

One of my favorite authors and I adore the Thursday Murder Club series. Kate, you nearly lost me with your suggestion of Tom Cruise for the movie version. Uncharacteristically wrong. Check out the Facebook groups which are casting the movie!

Book lovers will love this, and less avid readers will be motivated to pick up a book

Kate & Charlie Gibson talk about books and interview a wide range of authors, many you’ll know, several you’ll be thrilled to learn about. So fun and informative. Recently they visited the Library of Congress and that was a fascinating listen. You know Charlie from Good Morning America (etc) and you’ll be delighted by his daughter Kate who is whip smart and funny.

Expand your reading horizons!

I can't say enough good things about this podcast - it's interesting and helpful and insightful. Kate and Charlie ask for suggestions for how to make the podcast better, and I wouldn't change a thing! I've recommended it quite a few times, but always with the warning - don't listen unless you want to greatly expand your "want to read" list! I never would have found "This is Happiness" without Kate and Charlie, and it was my favorite book (of the 60) that I read last year. I recommended the book to one of my book clubs (yes I'm in 2), and never has a book been more universally loved. Thank you for expanding MY reading horizons! Keep up the awesome work, and thank you for all that you do to make this podcast happen!
