• 018: I hate Draco Malfoy - understanding the appeal of bad boys and villains
    Sep 7 2024

This week on The Confession Club Mary and Rose discuss why we think bad boys and psychos are so adored. We discuss why we don’t like Draco and why many people do, role play as slytherin boys (Tom riddle, Theodore nott and lorenzo Berkshire) and wonder if we’ve ever actually liked a boy romantically.

on this weeks episode we are adding two new segments to each episode for the first time! At the beginning Mary and rose both give one confession about their lives - it could be a secret, a funny story or an unpopular opinion. This week Mary confessed reading a 350,000 word Finnick Odair oc ao3 fic and Rose confessed her 1 month long talking stage with a boy she added on quick add.

our second segment is at the end of the episode in which we both give a song recommendation for each other to try, this week Rose recommended red (is my colour) by Imogen and The Knife and Mary recommended WILDFLOWER by Billie Ellish. Next week we are going to debrief what we thought of each others song choices!

  • 016: We read the most popular Wattpad fanfic so you don’t have to - ‘After’ by Anna Todd
    Aug 24 2024

We suffered through 100 chapters of After - the Harry Styles fanfiction that was published and made into 5 films by Anna Todd - so you don’t have to.

This week on The Confession Club Mary and Rose discuss the Wattpad fanfiction ‘After’ and unpack why Tessa and Hardin’s relationship is so toxic. We discuss why we hate Hardin and don’t like Tessa, the romanticisation of toxic relationships and the effect this has on real life relationships.

The problem with this book and the sequels is that there is no acknowledgement that the relationship between Hardin and Tessa is toxic and Hardin is emotionally and psychologically abusing Tessa. As a result this series, which is marketed at 13-16yr old girls finish the book with the idea that this relationship is romantic and something to aspire to - it’s not. This leads to girls getting into toxic relationships which is unhealthy and dangerous. We discuss this on this weeks episode of The Confession Club and much more.

our outro got cut off for some reason but I think it goes without saying that Mary and Rose don’t like the story and acknowledge how detrimental it is.
