The Culture of Freaknik

  • Summary

  • Freaknik was an annual spring break event that took place in Atlanta, Georgia, in the United States between 1983 and 1997. It was a celebration of black culture and music that drew thousands of college students and young people from across the country.

The event was known for its party atmosphere, with music, dancing, and drinking taking place on the streets of Atlanta. However, it also had a reputation for being rowdy and sometimes violent, leading to calls for it to be shut down.

Despite this controversy, Freaknik remains a cultural touchstone for many in the African American community, representing a time of joy and celebration in the face of adversity.

In this episode, we invite Byanka, an Atlanta native, and Clark Atlanta alumni to discuss the culture of Freaknik and Atlanta.
