ענינו המיוחד של אדמו"ר האמצעי הי' – לימוד החסידות בהרחבה, הן אמירת החסידות שלו היתה בשופי ובלי הגבלות, והן המאמרים שהודפסו בחייו על ידו (ודבר שבדפוס הוא לדורות) הם שלא בערך יותר (בכמות) ביחס למה שנדפס בימי אדה"ז שלפניו והצ"צ שלאחריו, (וכידוע שבספירות הנה אדה"ז הוא בחכמה (נקודה) ואדמו"ר האמצעי בבינה – "רחובות הנהר" וכו'). וההוראה מזה מובנת בפשטות: ללמוד חסידות באופן של הרחבה (ועד"ז בנוגע לנגלה דתורה). וכן להפיץ המעיינות חוצה באופן של הרחבה, ולכ"א יש את הכח, שליחות, זכות ותפקיד הזה. ואין להסתפק בשמיעת וחזרת הדברים אלא להביא את הדברים למעשה בפועל שהוא העיקר!

The unique characteristic of the Mitteler Rebbe was the study of Chassidus with great abundance. This is seen in his delivery of Chassidus in great abundance and without limitation, and in the large number of maamarim he printed during his lifetime, incomparably more than the number printed in the time of the Alter Rebbe before him and the Tzemach Tzedek after him. (And as known, the Alter Rebbe corresponds to Chochmah, which is a seminal point, while the Mitteler Rebbe corresponds to Binah, “the expanses of the river” etc.) The lesson from this is simple: to study Chassidus (and so too, Nigleh) in an expansive manner, and to spread the wellsprings of Chassidus outward in an expansive manner. Everyone has the ability, the mission, the merit, and the job of doing so, and one should not suffice with merely hearing and reviewing the words; rather, one must incorporate them in practical action, which is the main thing.

This year (like the first year), 9 Kislev (the birthday and yahrtzeit of the Mitteler Rebbe) falls on Shabbos Parashas Vayeitzei, which discusses Yaakov’s journey from Eretz Yisroel to the diaspora (corresponding to the birthday, when the soul descends to the body), and 10 Kislev (his day of liberation) falls on Sunday of Parashas Vayishlach, which discusses Yaakov’s journey from the diaspora to Eretz Yisroel (corresponding to the yahrtzeit, when the soul’s mission is completed). The lesson is that one must be involved in spreading the wellsprings of Chassidus outward, as the Mitteler Rebbe demanded, at all times – whether in a state of “Vayeitzei” (when one is about to enter “Charan,” the “anger of the world,” and he might think that he must first take care of himself before dealing with others), or in a state of “Vayishlach” (when one has just completed “twenty years in the house of Lavan” and he might think now is the time to return to the shul and beis midrash to rest and enjoy the “reward of the mitzvah”).

Chamishi of Parashas Vayeitzei states, “The man became exceedingly prosperous; he owned many flocks, maidservants and servants, and camels and donkeys”: Some people think that only “those who dwell in the tents,” meaning those who are fully immersed in Torah and holy matters, are required to increase in Torah study and hidur in mitzvos, etc., while businesspeople, who are involved with “flocks, servants and maidservants” in “Paddan Aram” etc., are permitted to “do what is done in our place” such as compromising “a little” when it comes to encroaching on another’s livelihood and other so-called “leniencies.” (As we find, sometimes something is totally prohibited for one person, while it is totally permissible for another, such as a “stain on a garment” which for a Torah scholar is a chilul Hashem, but not for an unlearned person.) But they must know that the ultimate purpose of their mission in being business is so that “the man become exceedingly prosperous” – to serve Hashem completely, not only while in the tent of Torah and davening, but even while standing in the marketplace among “camels and donkeys.”

Yosef was given his name because Rochel said, “May Hashem add another son for me” (as it says in revi’i of Parashas Vayeitzei). The Tzemach Tzedek explains that she meant a son who would turn those who are in the state of “other” into “sons.” This was also the work of my father-in-law, the Rebbe (whose name was “Yosef”) throughout his entire life, which he did with mesiras-nefesh, whether it was during the years of terrible decrees etc. or in later years when he came to free countries. Immediately upon arriving in America, he set out to abolish the mindset there that “America is different” and that in America materialism is paramount etc., which was a mentality of “other.” And he paved the way for every one of us to likewise turn those who are “other” into “sons.”

ב"דף השער" של ספר התניא כותב אדה"ז "לבאר היטב איך הוא קרוב מאד בדרך ארוכה וקצרה". וי"ל דבזה מתבטא חידושו של שיטת חסידות חב"ד על שיטת חסידות פולין: שיטת פולין היא ש"צדיק באמונתו יחי' – אל תקרי יחְי' אלא יחַי'", שהעסק והלימוד בפנימיות התורה נעשה ע"י הצדיק, והוא "מחי'" בזה את המקושרים אליו. דרך זו היא "קצרה וארוכה". היא "קצרה" בשטח המקום, כי היא פוטרת אותו מהיגיעה וההשתדלות ביותר הדרושה כדי להבין פנימיות התורה, אבל ב"כניסה לעיר" היא "ארוכה", מכיון שההתקשרות עם הצדיק היא רק בנוגע לנפה"א אבל הנפה"ב והגוף לא התברר עי"ז. אבל שיטת חב"ד, אכן ב"שטח" היא "ארוכה" – צריך להתייגע בעצמו ללמוד ולהבין פנימיות התורה, ובאופן שזה יחדור כל כחות הגלויים עד שגם השכל האנושי יבין אותה, ושהלימוד יביא לידי מעשה, אבל לכן דרך זו היא "קצרה" ביחס למילוי שליחותו.

The Alter Rebbe writes in the title page of the Tanya that the purpose of the sefer is “to explain clearly how it is very near…in a long and short way.” It can be explained that this expresses the unique quality of the approach of Chassidus Chabad over that of Polisher Chassidus: The approach of Polisher Chassidus is based on the verse “A tzaddik lives by his faith” – “Do not read it as ‘lives’ but as ‘gives life,’” meaning that the tzaddik, through his Torah and divine service, “gives life” to those who are connected to him. This path is “short and long”: It is “short” in terms of the effort of the chassid, who is exempted from the tremendous toil and effort required to understand the teachings of the inner dimension of Torah. But when it comes to actually “entering the city,” it is “long,” because the connection to the tzaddik is only through the G-dly soul, while the animal soul and the body are not transformed by it. In contrast, the Chabad approach is “long” in terms of the effort of the chassid, who must personally toil to study and understand the teachings, and in such a way that the teachings penetrates all of the revealed faculties including the human intellect and practical action, but precisely because of this, this path is “short” in terms of fulfilling one’s mission.

(1) At a farbrengen in Eretz Yisroel, one of the speakers said of a certain individual that now, since he is in the World of Truth and sees the greatness of studying Chassidus, he is envious of even the youngest student in Tomchei Temimim. And the truth is, this is a clear teaching of the Gemara. The Gemara says: “In the future, the Holy One, blessed be He, will make seven canopies for each and every tzaddik…and each and every one will be burned from the canopy of his fellow.” Meaning: since in this world he chose not to study these parts of Torah, they are “his fellow’s canopy,” and he cannot enter. But now that he sees its preciousness, he pushes to enter and gets “burned.” (2) Chassidus explains that the verse, “Let them bring the royal garment that the king has worn, and the horse upon which the king has ridden, and upon whose head the royal crown has been placed” refers to the Divine Essence and Being. Thus it is understood that every Jew can attain this level by learning Chassidus Chabad, and in such a way that the “study leads to action.” One must only have the will to do so, like the well-known saying, “Mozhesh, da nye chotshesh” – “You can, but you don’t want to!”

[על שאלת המלמד של ה"רוזשינער" ממנו למה לא חשב בעצמו לשאול שאלה זו ענהו "אויף א חלום איז קיין קושיא ניט..."], כי כאשר מלאך יורד למטה ליהודי ה"ז עלי' בשביל המלאך, כי מלאך הוא מוגבל, אבל נשמה למטה קשורה עם עצומ"ה הבלתי מוגבל! וזהו אפי' אם היהודי הוא במצב של "שינה", (כמו שהי' אצל יעקב, מצד היות נשמתו כלולה מנשמות כל ישראל וכו'), כי גם הוא יכול ברגע לצאת מהגבלותיו. וזוהי גם התשובה לאלו הטוענים מנין יש להם את הכחות להפיץ המעיינות חוצה וכו', כי לכל אחד יש בלי גבול כחות להלחם עם ה"חוצה", "שרו של עשו", ואין ממה להתפעל!

The verse states (in rishon of Parashas Vayeitzei), “…Angels of G-d were ascending and descending it.” Seemingly, as Rashi asks, it should have said “descending” and then “ascending”? (When the Ruzhiner was a child studying Chumash, he was known to always come up with Rashi’s question on the verse. But he didn’t ask this question on this verse. When his teacher asked why, the Ruzhiner replied, “On a dream, there are no questions….”) The explanation according to the inner dimension of Torah is that when an angel comes down to a Jew, it is in fact an ascent for the angel, because an angel is limited, whereas a soul in this world is connected to the Hashem’s Essence and Being, which is infinite. And this is true even if the Jew is “sleeping” (as was Yaakov, whose soul encompassed the souls of all Jews etc.), because even then, in a single moment, a Jew can break free from his limitations. This is also the response to those who ask how we have the power to spread the wellsprings outward etc.: Every Jew has unlimited strength to combat the “outside” and to combat “Esav’s guardian angel,” and there is nothing to be intimidated by.

מעלת חודש כסלו שהוא חודש השלישי דחדשי החורף, שאז מודגשת מעלת עבודת האדם מצ"ע, עפ"י המבואר בכ"מ דהעבודה של חדשי הקיץ היא באופן של "אתערותא דלעילא", ואילו העבודה דחדשי החורף, ימות הגשמים שבאים ע"י הקדמת ה"ואד יעלה מן הארץ", היא באופן של "אתערותא דלתתא". בקביעות ר"ח כסלו בש.ז. מודגש הענין של "מלכתחילה אריבער": א) "תהא שנת נסים". ב) ר"ה חל להיות בשבת. ג) ר"ח ביום השלישי "שהוכפל בו כי טוב" ד) פ' "תולדות יצחק" שלידתו היתה בנס ויש בה את הברכה של "ויתן לך האלקים וגו'" – "ויתן ויחזור ויתן". ומצד כל מעלות אלו הנה העבודה עכשיו, להביא את הגאולה, נעשית באופן נעלה ביותר ובמילא באה הגאולה מיד ממש! ואת הגאולה צריכים בפועל ממש ואי אפשר להחליף אותה אפי' בענין הכי נעלה כמו הפצת המעיינות חוצה שע"י אדה"ז וכו'.

The unique quality of the month of Kislev is that it is the third of the winter months, during which the emphasis is on man’s own service (winter is the season of rain, which comes after and as a result of the “mist rising up from the earth,” meaning, a Jew’s tefillah – an awakening from below), in contrast to the summer months (where the emphasis is on the awakening from above). The timing of Rosh Chodesh Kislev this year in particular emphasizes the approach of m’lechatchilah ariber: (1) The acronym for this year (תש"נ – 5750) is תהא שנת נסים – “May it be a year of miracles.” (2) Rosh Hashanah occurred on Shabbos. (3) Rosh Chodesh Kislev falls on Tuesday, when “‘It was good’ was said twice.” (4) The weekly parashah is “These are the descendants of Yitzchok…” whose birth was miraculous, and moreover, this parashah contains the blessing “And may Hashem give you…” – “May He give and give again.” Because of all these special qualities, the task at hand now – bringing Moshiach – can be carried out in the loftiest manner, and therefore the Redemption will come immediately. And the Redemption must take place in the literal sense: it cannot be substituted even by something as lofty as the spreading of the wellsprings outward by the Alter Rebbe etc.
