  • Free Speech, Civil War, & the Public Square - Dr. M.S Delay & Dr. A.V. Bendebury, DSPod #244
    May 2 2024

It's our final solo conversation from the tour and we're breaking down an issue that we have held different perspectives on for quite some time: the limits & importance of free speech. In part, we are responding the documentary "This Place Rules" by Channel 5 creator, Andrew Callaghan, which tracks the absurdity, hipocracy, and more than anything, the profiteering surrounding the buildup to the 2021 invasion of the Capitol in Washington D.C. Shilo argues that it could have been avoided if dissidents hadn't had their voices removed from the internet. Nastia isn't convinced, on account of the power of the incentives backing the revolt. In the end, we circle around the need for a de-algorithmatized public forum, which might provide the basis for an actual democratic republic. Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! • Liquid Sun, Mercury's Precession, Solar Cycle +Q&A - Dr. P.M.Robitaille, DemystiCon '24, DSPod #243
    Apr 28 2024

This presentation was recorded on April 7th, 2024 at the first DemystifySci conference in Austin TX. Dr. Pierre-Marie Robitaille presents an overview of his multi-decadal quest to understand the material basis of the stars. He also reveals a new theory to explain Mercury's anomalous precession - one that doesn't revert to warped spacetime or mathematical acrobatics. In the process, a clever solution to the mysterious solar cycles of magnetism is revealed, along with a possible mechanism for planetary formation, and sun spot production. Dr. Robitaille has faced an onslaught of attacks from the astrophysical community since he first turned his attention to the sun, perhaps because the material basis of the sun underpins all astrophysical revelations of modern times from black holes to the big bang. Like it or not, the material understanding of the sun appears to be in dire need of revision, and Dr. Robitaille has some unimpeachable concerns about the status quo. • The Paradox of Progresss - Dr. M.S Delay and Dr. A.V. Bendebury, DSPod #242
    Apr 25 2024

It’s week 5 on the road, and we’re deep in the weeds about the question of what we, as scientists, owe the world. Technological progress alone seems like a weak orienting principle, as does abandoning the pursuit of knowledge completely. So how do we hew a path that makes sense, when it seems like the institutions and organizations around us have gone astray? To help us make sense of the interface between science and ethics, we turn to an essay called “To Young Scientists,” read by Ayn Rand at MIT in the 1960s. Rand was writing at the peak of the nuclear age, where the destruction of the species, if not the planet, seemed imminent. Today, the threat of nuclear conflict looms once again, but the cutting edge risk lies in the ceaseless development of machine learning and AI technologies that threaten to engulf all of human practice. There are no easy answers at hand, but we eke out a few basic principles that can serve as the starting point for building a life where progress & meaning can align. Check out the essay and support the podcast by purchasing Ayn Rand's Essays in Objectivist Thought: https://amzn.to/3UaKnH4 Tell us your thoughts in the comments!!! • The Secret to Impossibly Precise Stonework of Ancient Times - Marcell Fóti, DSPod #241
    Apr 21 2024

Marcell Fóti is an ancient mysteries researcher who is trying to figure out how the ancient Egyptians and other cultures were able to carve stones with sub-millimeter precision with relatively primitive bronze tools. Fóti’s experiments with geopolymers - ceramic polymers that can easily be mistaken for natural stone - have led him to the conclusion that the inexplicable stonework of the ancient world doesn’t have to remain a mystery. We talk to him about Natron Theory, the five part explanation for how Egyptians made their false stones, the role that natural salt deposits play in the development of a stone-making civilization, evidence that precise stonework and natron are correlated around the world, and the open questions about the ancient stone makers that remain. • Techno-futurist SkyGod & UAP Mania - Dr. M.S Delay and Dr. A.V. Bendebury, DSPod #240
    Apr 19 2024

On the road between Austin and Santa Fe we make a pit stop in Roswell, New Mexico and sit down to make heads or tails of the UAP phenomena. Both of us are skeptics who want to believe, but are cursed by a nature that prevents us from committing to a single perspective. Instead, we dive into the mythological signifiers that surround the phenomenon, the deep yearning for someone who can take care of us, and the psychological innovations that are driven by the fear of living on a planet whose uncaring systems are so immense that they appear wholly beyond our control. Apr 14 2024

Dr. Steven Koonin is a theoretical physicist, former Chief Scientist at BP, former Under Secretary for Science at the Department of Energy in the Obama administration, and is currently a professor of Civil and Urban Engineering at NYU. He is also the author of Unsettled, a book about the abilities and limits of climate science. We talk with him about the great distance between the scientific reports and public conception, the social unrest that's seeded by unwarranted fear of impending catastrophe, and the delicate art of speaking out against motivated consensus. • Is Tech Causing Human Speciation? Drs. M.S. DeLay & A. Bendebury, DSPod #238
    Apr 4 2024

Get your DEMYSTICON 2024 tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/demysticon-2024-tickets-727054969987 This is our second week on the road and we're broadcasting from uber-sunny Joshua Tree, California. Today we start out with the observation that a dominant faction of the techno-futurist community seems to believe that if our civilization maximizes intelligence, everything will be just fine in the end. We intuitively balk at this promise - and in general, we are skeptical at the lack of vision about what that future might look like. To understand this belief we have to understand what is meant by "intelligence." Then we have to consider the alternatives. We look at the evolution of this dream/nightmare from the earliest days of computer science through the lenses of sci-fi authors like Bradbury & PKDick up through a recent JRE interview with Ray Kurzweil.
