  • Strategic Marketing for Business Growth with Natalie McGuinness Ep 221 - The Global Discussion
    Oct 16 2024

Natalie McGuinness, the Marketing Strategy and Business Development Director at Mason Hayes & Curran LLP, shared her remarkable professional journey and valuable insights in this episode of The Global Discussion, hosted by Simon Hodgkins. Known for her dynamic approach and strategic thinking, Natalie shared her career path, the evolving role of marketing in today's world, and the importance of staying curious in an increasingly complex business landscape.

A Career Built on Curiosity and Connection

Natalie McGuinness has had an impressive career trajectory, from selling mobile phones to her role today as a key player at Mason Hayes & Curran LLP, one of Ireland's leading law firms. Under her direction, the firm has tripled both in size and revenue—a testament to her ability to align marketing with broader business goals.

What sets Natalie apart is her relentless curiosity. "I never grew out of the why phase," she explained during the discussion. This insatiable desire to understand the world has shaped her career and fueled her commitment to continuous learning. A three-time graduate from University College Dublin, Natalie emphasized how her MBA gave her the "language of business" to advocate for the power of marketing in driving value, particularly in sectors like energy, technology, and healthcare.

    Driving Sector-Focused Strategies

A crucial part of Natalie's success at Mason Hayes & Curran LLP has been her ability to pivot the firm's marketing strategy from a traditional, department-focused approach to one that's deeply embedded in sector expertise. She spearheaded a shift towards aligning the firm's messaging and services with the specific needs of industries like energy, financial services, and healthcare.

She noted that clients have little patience for a learning curve. They want partners who understand their business challenges and can offer tailored solutions. By reshaping the firm's content strategy to make complex legal knowledge more digestible, Natalie has helped Mason Hayes & Curran stand out in a competitive marketplace, underscoring how this shift in focus has become a major differentiator for the firm.

Planning for the Future: AI and Staying Human in a Digital World

As businesses around the globe grapple with the rise of artificial intelligence (AI), Natalie is already thinking ahead. In her current role, she is overseeing the creation of Mason Hayes & Curran's private cloud and the implementation of AI tools that will improve the firm's ability to serve international clients. While AI presents incredible opportunities, Natalie stressed the need to balance technological innovation with a focus on people.

Leading Through Engagement and Fresh Perspectives

In addition to her role at Mason Hayes & Curran, Natalie sits on the boards of several influential organizations, including the St. Patrick's Day Festival and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce. Her involvement in these boards allows her to stay connected to diverse sectors and keeps her engaged with the broader business community.

  • The Healing Power of Art for Mental Health with Lisa Callaghan Ep 220 - The Global Discussion
    Oct 5 2024

Guest Lisa Callaghan joined Host Simon Hodgkins to discuss her work in the arts and mental health sector. This episode covers Lisa's passion for creativity, her journey through challenges, and her dedication to helping others heal through artistic expression. A Multifaceted Artist on a Mission Lisa Callaghan wears many hats, each reflective of her commitment to using art for connection and healing. As the Grants and Development Coordinator at Helium Arts, Lisa plays a vital role in an organization that brings creativity into the lives of children with lifelong health conditions. Beyond her work with Helium Arts, Lisa is also the founder of Expressive Minds, an initiative dedicated to enhancing mental health through art. It was born from her own experiences of recovery through creativity.

With a rich history that spans media, international education, and the arts, Lisa brings a wealth of varied experience to her projects. Lisa has learned to blend structure and creativity from her time at media agencies in Dublin to working in Italian language schools. It was during her stay in Italy that a pivotal moment changed her life. After experiencing a sudden health crisis, Lisa discovered the transformative power of art, not only as an emotional outlet but also as a therapeutic tool that could help others. Art as a Lifeline: The Birth of Expressive Minds Lisa shares her journey through mental health challenges, specifically her experience with psychosis while living abroad. Through this deeply personal story, Lisa explained how art played a crucial role in her recovery. She found a sense of belonging and self-expression by joining art groups, which inspired her to start Expressive Minds. Expressive Minds is designed to connect experienced artists with mental health services in the Sligo-Leitrim area of Ireland, creating a space for individuals to experience the benefits of art in a structured but nurturing environment. The Healing Power of Art: Helium Arts and Beyond Lisa's role at Helium Arts also speaks to her passion for the therapeutic aspects of creativity. Helium Arts is an Irish charity that works with children living with lifelong physical health conditions, bringing art into hospital clinics and community spaces. As Lisa discussed, the "Create While You Wait" initiative provides a beautiful way for children to explore their creativity while waiting for outpatient appointments, transforming an otherwise stressful experience into a calming and enjoyable one. Art, Nature, and Community Lisa also touched on the importance of nature in her artistic and personal life. She spoke about her experiences leading workshops that combine printmaking with elements of nature—using leaves, flowers, and natural textures to create art that's beautiful and deeply connected to the world around us. It's about getting back to basics, stepping away from our screens, and allowing ourselves to play—just like we did as children. Lisa remains focused on expanding Expressive Minds and ensuring that mental health services and creative arts become more sustainable and intertwined. • Breaking Through the Glass Ceiling with Eugina Jordan Ep 219 - The Global Discussion
    Oct 5 2024

Eugina Jordan is a three-time award-winning author, respected speaker, and member of the Harvard Business Review Advisory Council. She joins Host Simon Hodgkins on this episode of The Global Discussion. Eugina's story is one of breaking barriers and becoming a powerful voice in the fields of telecom, AI, and executive leadership. From Receptionist to CMO: A Journey Fueled by Resilience Eugina's journey began in 1970s Russia, where her mother worked tirelessly to provide Eugina with the best education possible. Through sheer grit, Eugina's mother managed to send her daughter to Canada, an opportunity that would transform Eugina's life forever. During her discussion with Simon, Eugina spoke warmly of her mother's sacrifices, noting how they laid the foundation for her success today. Her career in telecommunications started humbly as a receptionist at a small startup—a position from which she ascended to lead significant company transformations, including taking the startup public and its subsequent acquisition by Cisco. This path was just the beginning of Eugina's phenomenal career, which has included roles in major companies like Cisco, where she launched their 2012 global rebrand, and Parallel Wireless, where her strategic marketing initiatives were downloaded over a million times. The Power of Storytelling in a Tech World Eugina's unique blend of technical knowledge and strategic storytelling sets her apart in an industry often dominated by numbers and technology. Her passion for storytelling is not just about selling a product—it's about articulating the "so what" of a brand, turning technology into a narrative that resonates with people. During her conversation with Simon, Eugina discussed her passion for building—whether it's a company, a team, or a culture. This vision is clear in her achievements: 12 patents, creating new market categories, and executing successful go-to-market strategies for companies aiming for IPOs or acquisitions. She has also made her mark as an advocate for women in tech. Eugina has established mentorship programs, led initiatives to bring more female voices to telecom panels, and continuously emphasizes a people-first work culture. This commitment to others drove her to write her book, "UNLIMITED: The Seventeen Proven Laws for Success in a Workplace Not Designed for You." It has not only won multiple awards but has also been instrumental in helping women and immigrants believe in their limitless potential. UNLIMITED: A Book for the Dreamers and Doers Written as a guide for immigrants and women who want to break the glass ceiling, UNLIMITED offers practical advice on topics like negotiating, speaking up in meetings, and building effective networks. Eugina's mission is clear: the only limits are the ones we place on ourselves. It's a message for emerging leaders and those in positions of power, encouraging them to uplift the next generation of talent. Trailblazing AI Innovation in Telecom Eugina was recently recognized with the AI Trailblazer Award at the AI Revenue Summit—a particularly meaningful honor, given it was based on community votes. While she's passionate about her work at TIP, her newsletter, and her ongoing advocacy for AI, she also knows the value of stepping back. "You can't pour from an empty cup," she wisely noted, emphasizing her commitment to spending quality time with family and friends. • Redefining Digital Nomadism with Anna Maria Kochanska Ep 218 - The Global Discussion
    Oct 5 2024

The future of work is already here, and Anna Maria Kochanska is leading the way. As the Founder and CEO of The Remote Impact, Anna Maria helps governments, brands, and organizations navigate the evolving landscape of digital nomadism and remote work. Host Simon Hodgkins welcomed Anna to this episode of The Global Discussion, where she shared invaluable insights into the transformation of work, the impact of digital nomad communities, and how remote work has the potential to reshape entire societies. From Early Remote Worker to Global Consultant Long before the world was forced into remote work by the pandemic, Anna Maria was already paving the way. She became the first person in her company to adopt remote working, leading by example and proving the value of flexibility in the workplace. When COVID-19 made remote work mainstream, Anna Maria took her experience to the next level—launching The Remote Impact, a consultancy designed to help governments, companies, and organizations harness the potential of remote workers and digital nomads. Breaking Stereotypes About Digital Nomadism During the show, we addressed the misconceptions often accompanying the digital nomad lifestyle. Many imagine digital nomads lounging on a beach with a laptop, but as Anna Maria explained, "That image of a laptop under a palm tree is just a stereotype. Most of us, 99% of the time, are working from our home bases, co-working spaces, or even hotels—somewhere stable where we can focus." The digital nomad community has also evolved significantly. Pre-pandemic, it was often characterized as primarily young white men in tech. Today, it's far more diverse, encompassing people from finance, marketing, design, and other sectors, with around 50% of digital nomads now being women. The community is also growing, and recent estimates suggest there are approximately 35 million digital nomads globally—a group that has expanded well beyond the initial niche, partly due to increased remote work opportunities during the pandemic. Digital Nomadism and Its Societal Impact One of the most powerful insights Anna Maria shared was how remote work and digital nomadism can significantly impact societies at large. Governments around the world are starting to realize the potential benefits of attracting digital nomads. In fact, over 65 countries have introduced digital nomad visas in recent years as they recognize the economic and social opportunities remote workers bring. Anna helps governments develop strategies to attract digital nomads, emphasizing their unique advantages: They bring income and contribute to innovation, yet they do not compete for local jobs. Digital nomads can be a key factor in revitalizing areas experiencing depopulation, such as small towns or villages that young people have moved away from in search of opportunities. A Call for Data-Driven Understanding Anna Maria also stressed the importance of relying on data to understand the impact of remote work accurately. Misconceptions are still prevalent—often perpetuated by sensationalist media depictions. She advocates for a more critical approach: "We need data to show the real impact of remote work—economically, socially, and culturally. When people start to see the numbers, we can have a deeper, more meaningful conversation." Follow The Global Discussion on LinkedIn, YouTube, Spotify, and more! • Essential Tips for Creative Advertising Success with Ger Roe Ep 217 - The Global Discussion
    Oct 5 2024

Join us for a rare glimpse into the mind of one of Ireland's most influential creative leaders, Ger Roe. In this episode of The Global Discussion, Host Simon Hodgkins speaks with Ger, a Board Creative Director at Publicis Dublin and an Executive Board Director at ICAD (Institute of Creative Advertising and Design). Ger Roe is a visionary in the advertising world, known for his remarkable ability to craft brand personalities and memorable experiences. "I believe in the power of creativity to leave a mark. Great creative work should move people, spark laughter, and inspire action – anything but be forgettable." - Ger Roe From Struggles to Success: The Early Creative Years Ger Roe's journey to becoming a leading creative director wasn't without its challenges. He shared candidly about growing up as a dyslexic with ADHD—a reality he once felt compelled to hide. But instead of succumbing to these struggles, Ger found solace in art, which ultimately propelled him toward his passion for advertising. A Champion for Creativity – The Role at Publicis Dublin Today, Ger leads multidisciplinary creative teams at Publicis Dublin across major accounts like Virgin Media, Heineken, AXA, and Renault. He is also a member of the Publicis Global Creative Council, a role that has taken his expertise to international stages, judging major creative festivals like Cannes Lions. Ger's mission is clear: to produce creative work that "leaves a mark." This idea runs through every campaign produced by Publicis Dublin, aiming not just to occupy mental space but to linger there. "You can pour a massive budget into a campaign, but it's far easier if the creative work itself is memorable. That's where our mantra, 'Leave a Mark,' really comes to life," explained Ger. Humor as a Creative Antidote One of the key points Ger emphasized was the evolving role of humor in advertising. He expressed concern about how, in an era of increasing cultural sensitivity, humor is often sidelined for fear of offending audiences. But he passionately argued for its comeback. Creativity as a Team Sport Ger's creative philosophy is rooted in collaboration. During the episode, he highlighted the value of working with diverse, specialized talent—those who can bring different strengths to the table. It's not just about the big idea; it's also about expert execution. The Role of Space and Balance Despite being at the forefront of the fast-paced advertising world, Ger spoke about the need for balance—a lesson he's learned from observing younger generations. "I've come to realize the value of carving out time for myself, whether it's going for a swim, spending time with family, or just stepping away from my work," he shared. "It's a reminder that great ideas aren't born from burnout, but from inspiration—and inspiration comes when we allow ourselves a little space." A Call to Creatives: Bring Back the Joy Ger left us with an inspiring call to action for creatives worldwide: bring back the joy. "The world needs humor and human connection now more than ever. Let's find ways to make people smile, to touch hearts, and to make sure our work is remembered for the right reasons," he urged. Follow The Global Discussion on LinkedIn, YouTube, Spotify, and more! • Redefining Marketing for Good with Morgan Roth Ep 216 - The Global Discussion
    Oct 5 2024

The Host of The Global Discussion, Simon Hodgkins, is joined by Morgan Roth, Chief Marketing Officer at the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA). Morgan, who has been at the helm of MDA's marketing efforts, shared insights about the organization's journey, the evolving nature of nonprofit narratives, and her unique leadership perspective that drives MDA forward in its mission to transform lives. A Lifelong Calling in Marketing and Advocacy From the beginning of the conversation, it is evident that Morgan's role at MDA is much more than just a job—it's the culmination of a lifelong passion. As someone living with a neuromuscular disease herself, Morgan described her work as feeling like "coming home." This deep personal connection gives her a unique perspective on the challenges faced by individuals living with neuromuscular conditions and fuels her dedication to changing lives for the better. Morgan's background in marketing spans both nonprofit and international arenas, allowing her to understand the nuances of communication across different cultures. She spoke passionately about her work at MDA, calling it a privilege to lead such an iconic brand in a new, exciting age. She emphasized the importance of connectivity—a value that has shaped her career and MDA's approach to engaging supporters, patients, and stakeholders. A Commitment to Dignified Nonprofit Narratives Morgan's commitment to reshaping nonprofit narratives was a significant theme throughout the episode. She talked about "dignified nonprofit narratives"—a shift away from outdated, exploitative methods of using guilt to raise money to something more meaningful and empowering. Morgan is a firm believer in inviting donors to be partners in a solution rather than simply making them feel pity for those in need. It's an ethos that puts people first and draws attention to the power of community-driven progress. As Morgan aptly put it, the goal is not to "throw money at a problem" but to invest in a vision that sees everyone living longer, fuller lives—"Love longer, live stronger." AI and the Future of Neuromuscular Research Morgan touched on how AI is becoming a powerful tool for MDA's mission. AI, she explained, has the potential to personalize diagnoses and future treatment options for neuromuscular diseases, which are often complex and vary significantly from person to person. Celebrating 75 Years of Legacy, Impact, and Momentum Looking ahead, Morgan shared exciting news about MDA's upcoming milestone—its 75th anniversary. This significant event is not just about marking the passage of time but also about celebrating the incredible impact and progress the organization has made. Since its inception, MDA has transformed lives, improving both longevity and quality of life for those affected by neuromuscular diseases. Leadership, Inclusivity, and Women in the Workplace Morgan also shared her experiences as a leader, particularly as a founding member of Chief, a network aimed at supporting women in executive roles. She spoke candidly about the challenges women face in leadership positions, particularly in breaking away from the expectation to always be agreeable. True leadership, she noted, is about setting boundaries, challenging norms, and being willing to step outside the comfort zone. Follow The Global Discussion on LinkedIn, YouTube, Spotify, and more! Sep 29 2024

Host Simon Hodgkins had the pleasure of speaking with not just one but two guests—Tereza Roux and Noni Virani on this episode of The Global Discussion. Tereza Roux is the CEO and founder of Virtual Wine Concierge, a company that has been crafting memorable wine experiences for nearly a decade. With over 20 years in the wine and spirits industry and a certification from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust, Tereza has built her reputation on her expertise in food and beverage pairings, her work with high-end resorts, and her keen business acumen as a cultural curator.

In this episode, Tereza shared her passion for wine, food diversity, and the exciting new venture she's co-hosting with Noni—The Global Food Network, a podcast that dives deep into food, culture, and how both impact communities worldwide.

From Virtual Wine Tastings to Global Food Conversations

Tereza's journey as the founder of Virtual Wine Concierge began in 2014 when she identified a gap in the market for personalized wine experiences. Her company offers both virtual and in-person wine services, including beverage consultation, education, and event management. Over the years, Tereza has worked alongside chefs, resort managers, and private clients to curate unforgettable experiences that blend the finest wines with global cuisines.

    Bridging Wine and Food Diversity

What made this episode particularly special was the shared journey Tereza is now on with Noni Virani, the founder of O.Z.K. Studios and a DEIB Manager (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging) with a passion for global food culture. Together, Tereza and Noni are co-hosting The Global Food Network, a podcast that explores the intersection of food, culture, and inclusivity.

Noni Virani brought her unique perspective to the episode, drawing from her extensive experience in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB). As the founder of O.Z.K. Studios, Noni is deeply committed to global inclusion and creative expression, making her the perfect partner for The Global Food Network. Noni's focus on inclusivity goes beyond food choices; she emphasizes how thoughtful planning can create a sense of belonging in any setting.

Noni aims to illuminate how food connects people across borders and how we can build more inclusive environments.

Tereza and Noni first connected through a LinkedIn audio event on food diversity, where Noni hosted a discussion about the challenges of ensuring food inclusivity in corporate settings—an issue Tereza had encountered herself during her years in hospitality. From there, the pair realized they shared a common mission: to spotlight how food, much like wine, can be a powerful tool for bringing people together despite cultural or dietary differences.

Looking Ahead: The Global Food Network

With The Global Food Network, Tereza and Noni are expanding their reach, aiming to engage listeners in discussions that range from traditional food and wine pairings to more intricate topics like the cultural significance of bread, food sustainability, and even food's role in mental health.
