  • The wonderful world of wallpaper
    May 11 2024

    Send us a Text Message.

Sam and Naomi are both huge advocates for incorporating wallpaper into their designs.

In this episode we unpack practical advice about the different types of papers available: tips on how to incorporate it in innovative ways; how wallpaper can easily transform a space by incorporating texture and dimension; the origins of wallpaper and inevitably there are some anecdotes.

When discussing our personal favourite papers, these are so vastly different: whereby Naomi likes to push the boundaries with provocative nudes, flock, foil and leopard; Sam on the other hand appreciates more calming, dreamy, grounded subjects.

So, get comfortable, make yourself a drink and be prepared to immerse yourself into the wonderful world of wallpaper. Think moderation, think beyond papering one wall, yet resist wallpapering within an inch of your life!

  • The one where Sam and Naomi introduce themselves
    Mar 7 2024

Maximalists, colour lovers, creative pragmatists ... just some of the few terms that might be associated with Sam and Naomi.

But more than anything they love chatting all things interiors, and sharing their knowledge and thoughts on a plethora of topics related to the home.

Naomi spent most of her working life at the UN before retraining as an interior designer, whilst Sam has worked as an interior stylist for over 25 years. They met on instagram through a mutual contact. It was meant to be: initially they did a series of Instagram Lives and then they took the plunge to create the Podcast. Sam does all of the digital rendering and between them they do all of the related tasks. Their USP is that after recording a baker’s dozen in their first series they are yet to meet IRL, as Naomi is based in Denmark and Sam in the UK. Yet their mutual love of interiors has drawn them together, and so The Interior Lovers podcast was born.

  • Kitchen islands, pantries and open shelving
    Mar 7 2024

    Send us a Text Message.

Welcome back to The Design Lovers Podcast!

In this episode we lean into all things kitchen islands, pantries and shelving. Ways to improvise with pantries if you don’t have one per se. Out of sight, out of mind: if healthy ingredients are on display we’re more likely to eat them!

From a practical perspective having a pantry apparently prevents food wastage and excessive buying – is it a gimmick? We talk filler cupboards and form and function. We touch on allotments and how there is such a demand for them post covid.

Are kitchen islands a status symbol? Repurpose vintage pieces to create an island but consider scale and accessibility.

Open shelving – styling them and creating vignettes to bring you joy, but not for everyday storage as dust collectors. All of the above makes the kitchen feel more like a non-kitchen kitchen. Express yourself in the kitchen and remember to incorporate items that make you happy.

  • Bathrooms - and why they needn't be boring
    Mar 7 2024

    Send us a Text Message.

Are you in a conundrum about renovating your bathroom?
In this episode we discuss why bathrooms needn’t be boring: we discuss how a fairly featureless functional space such as a bathroom can be transformed into a unique, fun and personality-filled space. We make sense of a bathroom: how to create a spa-like, life-filled environment. Terrazzo – ways to incorporate this versatile material in your bathroom.
We tap into repurposing/refurbishing sanitaryware. A well-designed bathroom or shower room can totally elevate your bathing experience and create a sensory space which improves your wellbeing. Incorporating artwork in a bathroom, be bold; make the space yours. We discuss tiling arrangements and tile trends and how longevity matters. Bespoke elements: the importance of anthropometrics, adding character and natural elements.
From sharing some of our favourite resources and tips, including colour palette, to insights regarding flooring, lighting, smart mirrors and weaving tech into a bathroom. We also chat about hardware, ideas for window treatments, extractor fans and, of course, always natural plants.
Oh, and it’s official, we have banned vertical blinds, and aluminium and wooden venetian ones! So express yourself in your bathroom and have some fun.

Some of our Favourite Design Books

Welcome back to The Design Lovers Podcast! This week we sit down and discuss some of our favourite Design Books. So if you’re in need of a digital detox, then grab a cup of coffee and listen to us review some treasures from our physical design libraries. We are both veracious readers, especially so far as design publications are concerned, so our passion isn’t as a result of the current “Bookshelf Wealth” trend.

We debate elements of some of our well-thumbed editions, together with some newly released ones also. We review The New York Times Book of Interior Design and Decoration by Norma Skurka; New Rural, Where to Find it and How to Create It, by Ingrid Weir; Curate: At Home with Old & New by Lynda Gardener and Ali Heath; The Monocle Book of Homes: A Guide to Inspiring Interiors; Island Style by India Hicks and SY: Love for Textiles by Ikea.

    The books we discussed:

    - Curate: At Home with Old & New by Lynda Gardener and Ali Heath
    - The Monocle Book of Homes: A Guide to Inspiring Interiors

  • Quirkiness rules - time to embrace your inner eccentric
    Mar 7 2024

    Send us a Text Message.

In this episode we define quirky interiors and metaphorically unpack how so many arbitrary ideas, such as random collections and eccentric objects, can really define you, and how mixing periods of style creates a decorative look which is unique to you. Collections are as the name implies: collecting objects over time, and that is half of the fun of owning a collection: you don’t generally have a collection overnight.

Curiosity killed the cat, … Sam and Naomi! Sometimes it’s important to know when to stop, give your objects sufficient space to allow them to breathe, and yet one’s space needs to reflect your personality.

Creating something unique makes a space intriguing and keeps us grounded. We talk about quirky spaces which cleverly use colour, but also feel that sometimes you have to draw the line between making an art statement just for the sake of it as opposed to creating a quirky interior to tell a story about you.

Building collections needs to relate to you.
It’s capturing a moment in time which you want to relive through your own space, and then elevating an object. We discuss how we like lamps in the kitchen that give pools of light and a touch of frivolity; and how self-expression is commonly a question of having the confidence to reflect one’s personality in a space.

We both embrace the unexpected in different ways: Sam collects cruet sets, baskets from around the globe and unusual fabric; whilst Naomi has a bit of a soft spot for taxidermy: crocodiles, monkey skulls and turtle shells abound in her interiors!

Join us as we explore this thought-provoking topic. As always there are endless anecdotes and laughter, so boil the kettle, flick the switch on the Nespresso machine and pull up a chair ;)

  • An ode to the humble dining table.
    Mar 7 2024

    Send us a Text Message.

Welcome back to The Design Lovers Podcast!
In this episode we talk all things dining: tables, chairs and eating routines. The origins of dining tables, communal table arrangements and some stats about how many people eat at a dining room table.

We discuss different shapes of tables: Naomi has the Aero Saarinen marble tulip table, and Sam has a G-Plan wooden classic; practicality of size and shape matters.

Eclectic seating, benches, and other seating are debated. Multi-purpose usage, table cloths, linen napkins, table protectors (yes they were a thing!) and ambient lighting are all discussed. Outdoor dining options are also covered.
