We’re only in it for the money.

    HAHAHAHA

OK, OK...we’re just a bunch of professional musicians with pretty diverse backgrounds who decided to take on a pretty big challenge and have some fun in the process.

Now, you might ask, “Oh yeah? Professional musicians, eh? What makes you think you can play Frank’s music as well as [insert Zappa family/band member here]?”

Well, maybe you haven't heard of us individually, but "we're pretty good musicians" and you probably have heard of the folks on our resumes:

BB King, Mick Fleetwood, Vinnie Colaiuta, Googoosh, Dweezil Zappa, LA Philharmonic, Arthur Barrow, Munich Philharmonic, Bryan Beller, Popa Chubby, Yo Yo Ma, Limelight: A Tribute To Rush, Pinetop Perkins, Chicago Lyric Opera, Madison Opera, blah blah blah....you get the idea.

As for Frank's music, he was constantly changing things, both for his own creative choices and to adapt to the different musicians he had over the years. He also understood that his live performances were entertainment: it's supposed to be a rock show, not a piano recital.

With all that in mind, we don’t think playing Song X from Album Y note-for-note while staring at our shoes is the proper way to go about this.

The result of that approach (combined with a lot of homework) is a show that pays respect to Zappa’s legacy, but is also new and different and dangerous and FUN, with lots of eyebrows.

    Kinda like Frank.

  • Madeleine Peyroux - "Let's Walk" due out June 28th. Listen to the interview on The Jazz, Blues & R&B Podcast and Radio Show PERIOD!
    Jun 10 2024

Acclaimed jazz singer, songwriter and interpreter Madeleine Peyroux will release Let’s Walk, her first album in six years, on June 28th. The new songs present sides of the artist only touched on in the past. The collection is her most diverse, intimate and bold work as she shares thoughtful and revealing views on personal and societal concerns. Peyroux offers hope through understanding and community by using one of our most unifying means, music.

Let’s Walk is Peyroux’s ninth album and the first in which she co-wrote every song with longtime collaborator Jon Herington. As evidenced from her new single “Please Come On Inside”, Peyroux has empathy and wisdom to impart. While many of us have lost a connection or a relationship with someone close due to these polarizing and divisive times, Peyroux offers a way back through compassion and kindness.

Stylistically, Let’s Walk may be Peyroux’s most varied yet cohesive collection thus far. She incorporates elements of jazz, folk, gospel blues, Americana, chamber pop, Latin rhythms and a little playful humor into the mix. The songs are interwoven around contemplative, observational and confessional narratives, making it the deepest and most substantive album of her illustrious catalog.

The title track was inspired by the mass mobilization of everyday people standing up and unifying for civil rights around the world in 2020. The stunning “How I Wish” is soul-searching awakening in response to the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. On “Nothing Personal,” she addresses sexual assault – both her own, and countless others, with her aching and poignant vocals.

As much depth and soul searching as Let’s Walk presents, there is a lighter side as well. The playful “Me and the Mosquito” features a Caribbean-infused rhythm and vocal as Peyroux tackles the ever-elusive pest that will not let her sleep at night. She closes the album with a humorous, while somewhat serious advisory, via the tongue-in-cheek, speedy spoken-word track “Take Care”, inspired by the dub poet and activist Linton Kwesi Johnson.

Let’s Walk finds Madeleine Peyroux in the most freely creative place of her celebrated career. With eight albums and worldwide acclaim, she refuses to stand still as she arrives at a new artistic and creative plateau. True artists always continue to move forward, much like the album title suggests.

A Message from Malcom Lee Christian was a part of the bulk of my life. He brought happiness to a lot of people through his writing and his music. I’m sad to report that he passed away yesterday morning at a friend’s apartment. There was no secret that we were separated and in the process of a divorce, but now I’m legally a widow, and it is a very weird, multifaceted feeling of grief. What I plan on doing is seeing what the next steps are and taking care of myself. I’m very happy that I have the support of family and friends through this rough time. It definitely would’ve been harder if I was alone. I know I’ll be ok, but it’ll take time. I spoke with his sister, and we are in agreement. We don’t believe he would’ve wanted a service. I have an idea of what to do, and she agrees. If people are interested you can PM me.We plan on putting a notice in the obituaries in MN, VA, and maybe WV. If you would like to pay your respects, we ask that you make a donation to a nonprofit organization that focuses on mental illness and addiction in his name. He’s now at peace with Rufus. Christian Michael Gerard (November 22, 1972 - May 24, 2024)
