  • Helping Kids Cope With Big Emotions with Kim Feeney

    Are you unsure of how to help your child cope with BIG emotions?  At times do you feeling like you're failing at parenting?  In this week's episode, Kim Feeney, a licensed independent social worker and a registered play therapist supervisor stops by to give us sage advice on how to help our kids emotionally regulate by becoming their emotion coach.

    Kim Feeney is the host of Butterfly Beginnings Counseling YouTube channel where she educates parents and other play therapists on how to understand the motivation behind a child's behavior.

    Today on the show, Kim and I chat about:

    • what emotional regulation is and what the benefits are to helping children to emotionally regulate,
    • why play therapy is a great way to engage kids to behave and model a healthy expression of feelings,
    • the varying states of arousal- how to identify them and how to help our kids move through varying levels of arousal to achieve a calm and collected state and 
    • Kim gives us a framework on how to emotionally coach our children from tantrum to calm.

  • Growing in Resilience Part 2

    Last week on Epsiode 56, I started to explore how to grow in resilience and today I’m continuing last week’s conversation with 8 juicy examples of how you can grow your own emotional fortitude reserves.  

    What I love about these suggestions the most? Aside from helping you to grow in resilience,  they are essentially practices that are well worth your time, any way. It’s amazing to me how having high serving practices in place enrich your life and mutually support each other.

    Here are the 8  ways to grow in resilience discussed in today's episode:

    1. Adopt a religious or spiritual practice.
    2. Be that social butterfly more often.
    3. Become a lifelong learner. 
    4. Tap into your physical fitness. 
    5. Be present, not distracted. 
    6. Practice Gratitude.
    7. Don’t be a cavewoman when it comes to your cognitive and emotional flexibility.
    8. Find your true purpose and calling in life.

    I originally wanted to talk about Growing in  resilience a year ago when we were already a few months into the world falling flat on its face. Fast forward one and half years later and we’re still on shaky ground. I want to hold space for those of you who are feeling the weight of the world on your shoulders. 

    >>WHY GROWING IN RESILIENCE IS IMPORTANT

    It's been a tough time with a lot of heartbreaks, and a lot of global suffering.  It takes courage and grit to wake up and still keep moving one foot in front of the other towards your dreams. Having emotional fortitude and growing in resilience can help.

    Today’s episode is all about resilience and offering practical tips and perspectives on how you can build upon your own reservoir. In fact, there are many things you can do to actively grow in resilience that there’ll be two episodes to cover it.

    GROWING IN RESILIENCE PART 1
    Specifically, this episode will cover 3 ways you can grow in resilience. Those ways are rooted in:

    •  realistic optimism, 
    • facing your fears and 
    • following a moral compass.

    Friend, should you exercise during your period? I know it’s tempting to push yourself and ignore how your body feels. BUT, is that really in your best interest?

    Diet culture encourages us to workout as intensely as possible so that we can rev up our metabolism. And it also shames us when we can’t keep up.  It's easy to feel defeated when you're body can't keep up with these rigid expectations.

    Your body is working extra hard during menstruation. When we consider that exercise places added stress on your body, that means exercising during your period really taxes your system.

    If you’re new to creating a morning routine or even if you’re a seasoned pro, realize that as good as your morning routine is, there may come a time when your morning routine starts to lose some of it’s shine. Now this is totally no fault of your own.
