    Sophie Cartledge joins Catherine in this episode to talk about her autism discovery via an ADHD diagnosis in perimenopause at the age of 44. After researching why so many women were being diagnosed ADHD in perimenopause, for her work and simultaneously really starting to struggle with a number of things in her own life, she put two and two together and sought a diagnosis. Looking back now, she can see how the years of not knowing, have taken their toll both mentally and physically, leading her to a place of extreme burnout and feeling broken that have made perimenopause and her early 40’s such a rough ride. She can also see how perimenopause wasn’t just about her hormones changing, they were the catalyst for the ‘unmasking’ process. Discovering she is AUDHD has made so much sense of her life. Sophie always knew she was different somehow, often described as quirky, creative, sensitive and caring too much. And with this, she had always carried this feeling that something was ‘off’, she just couldn't place what. She had put a lot of it down to trauma, yet despite therapy, much of these feelings remained. Sophie is really passionate about sharing her experience and knowledge to raise more awareness of the intersection that exists between Autism, ADHD & perimenopause in the hope that it might help others make sense of their combined hormone and neurodivergent journey’s too. :::: Sophie is a Menopause and Hormone health educator & founder of Hormones on the blink.     This is a memorial episode, to honor the life and legacy of Mary’s 90 year old (very) late discovered autistic mum who sadly passed away in April 2023. Mary wanted to record an episode about how the 'mystery' that was the spikeyness of her profile gave Mary the motivation to turn detective on why they were both so misunderstood and misrepresented. Mary was eventually formally diagnosed autistic (age 51 in 2017). Already in the most humongous burnout and unable to continue working, Mary became a carer for her mum late in 2019 and she was sure that her mum had hit an autistic burnout crisis too. In 2022 Mary did manage to get their GP to accept self identification for her mum, after a few years of banging her head against the brick wall of expecting he could understand that she was too infirm to access diagnosis (never mind that she would probably have died before getting to the top of the waiting list). Sadly however, this did not open up any possibilities of finding autism informed elder care or autism informed support for Mary and her mum. Struggling so badly that she couldn't keep her safe from falls and several resulting hospitalisations which were disgracefully inadequate, Mary believes that her mum might have survived if there had been some proper understanding of her needs in her final days. Their GP de-listed both Mary and her mum just before she died because she wrote a letter asking him to do more for her mum. Mary’s mum died without a doctor. Mary had asked numerous times for a diagnosis of EDS/connective tissue condition because there were clear connections with both their symptoms. Mary wanted to say this about how accommodations have enabled her to record this episode: “Your understanding and lived experience is in itself all the accommodation I require. You have given me all the support I need to prepare in advance and your intentions are transparent. You are supporting my reality rather than challenging my motivation. Such adjustments as your support have not been there for me in other environments, especially at work which was damaging my health to the point of being unable to continue working.     Dr Rebecca (Becci) Jackson is also known as The Quirky Brain Coach. Becci is an autistic and ADHD positive psychology coach who works with ADHD/autistic adults on zest, self-regulation and executive functions. Having been misdiagnosed with an anxiety disorder and depression, Becci discovered her neurodivergence towards the start of the pandemic. Once she got the user manual to her brain, she turned her interest and training in coaching into specifically focusing on coaching for people like her. Before that, she was a university lecturer in linguistics, completing a PhD in the field. When not eating, sleeping, breathing and researching coaching psychology, Becci can be found hiking, travelling, meditating, journalling, cuddling her dog, and planning her next holiday. Last year, Becci walked to Everest Base camp just to see if she could, and...she did.     Catherine speaks to Lauren Fernandez a trainer, speaker, advocate, content developer and Founder & Director of Mask Off CIC and a fellow trainer on the NHS National Autism Trainer Programme.

    Through her work with ‘Mask Off’ she educates minds, challenges attitudes and promotes equality through the 'Invisible' Black autistic Female's perspective.

    Lauren was diagnosed autistic at aged 26. She is also a mum and will be speaking at The Autism Show in London this month sharing her insights into maternity and autism, and the needs of autistic people, especially those who face extra identity challenges.

    In this episode Lauren speaks openly of her experiences as a black, late discovered autistic woman and the many challenges she has encountered not just as a mother, but throughout school and as an adult, and of her experiences of being sectioned and an inpatient in NHS adult mental health services.

    Catherine speaks to Faye Twinn about her late autistic discovery. Faye discovered she was autistic in her late 30’s and this discovery changed her entire outlook on life itself. She spent her teens in Devon and it was there within her secondary school that she was identified as ‘dyslexic’. Struggling to fit in, she quickly self identified as arty and found that within the creative subjects she could strive. She went on to study Fine Art at Falmouth University. Later retaking her English and Maths GCSE’s, gaining a PGCE in arts education and completing a Masters in costume at Central Saint Martins, London. She feels that she scrabbled through her late teens and 20’s and worked in various settings to get by. Eventually settling into lecturing art and fashion. She spent 15 years as a Lecturer before resigning during the pandemic. These days Faye can be found working as a studio potter in Essex. She is married, has a 8 year old son and 2 step children in their 20’s. The work that she produces now, came from needing to step back and an understanding that some of us need to live slower for our well-being. She creates eco conscious functional pottery and strives to provide simple pieces that can be used to create little moments of loveliness.     Catherine speaks to Anita Patel about her late autistic discovery.

    Anita received a late diagnosis of Autism and ADHD in 2023, after recovering from breast cancer and also burnout, through many years of masking.

    Anita’s life has totally changed since her late discovery and she is keen to raise awareness about the role intersectionality can also play, when seeking answers and accessing support.

    Being a South Asian woman and having a family who do not ‘fit the mould’, she knows first-hand about the further cultural challenges that exist for neurodivergent individuals.

    This is turn can feel isolating - and stops them from sharing their experiences - she is hoping to try and change this. One of her favourite quotes is:

    “Fair isn’t everyone getting the same thing. Fair is everyone getting what they need in order to be successful.”

    Catherine speaks to Sofia Akbar about her late autistic discovery.

    Sofia is a late diagnosed AuDHD single mum and secondary maths teacher.

    Her self discovery journey started from the trials of her oldest son's autism diagnosis, impacted by the trauma of (TW) domestic abuse and racial discrimination. She was recognised for her Support for Inclusive Learning by Scottish Asian Minority Ethnic Educators in 2022 and also won Small Business Award from Scottish Asian and Business Awards 2023 for her private tuition business called Limitless Learners.

    Sofia has also been nominated as a finalist for British Muslim Awards Community Spirit for her role in setting up and leading Scottish Ethnic Minority Autistics CIC.
