  • A Spooky Story for Spooky Season! | The Long Way Home
    Oct 18 2024

    Send me a message!

As a special treat this Halloween season, I'm sharing with you a story I've yet to release anywhere else! This story comes straight out of one of my works in progress, the follow up to Legends and Tales, titled "Even More Legends and Tales".

I hope you enjoy this sneak peek at a future release, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the story!

Welcome to The Long Way Home, the podcast where we dive into the changes the world has gone through over the past 4 decades! Join host Josh "Bearheart" Hawk as he meanders along this windy road, recounting stories from his childhood in Ohio and reliving the late 80s', 90s' and even the turning of the clock into the new millennium.

We all know the saying, "you can't go home again", and that's more about the passage of time than anything else. Home, at least the way we all knew it as kids, doesn't exist. The world changes, people move on and life morphs into something we barely recognize as we work to raise our kids, pay our bills and try to find some semblance of normalcy.

  • Ghost Hunting and Other Halloween Adventures | The Long Way Home
    Oct 14 2024

    Send me a message!

Halloween was one of my favorite holidays as a kid, but it was less about the candy and more about the ghost hunting for me. Mom would pile us in the car, along with one of her friends and their kids, and we would drive around for hours in search of ghosts. We never found any, but there were times where the chill in the air was actually warmer than the chill down our spines. My mom would have probably been the star of one of those urban exploration channels on YouTube if she'd been born a few years later, but she would also have probably wound up in jail a time or two as well!

  • Fall Used to Be About Football | The Long Way Home
    Oct 11 2024

    Send me a message!

One of the best things about fall in the '90s was the return of college football! I would watch the Buckeyes most Saturdays in the fall, though my short attention span usually meant I was outside by halftime playing my own version of the game on TV. I also spent many years playing football, all the way through my junior year in high school, and it taught me a lot about being a gracious winner and picking myself up after a loss.

  • Teachers Change Lives and They Deserve So Much More! | The Long Way Home
    Oct 7 2024

    Send me a message!

Most of us have that one teacher that really affected us, changed our lives for the better. You might even have more than one.

Teachers are some of the most underrated people in our society, and they deserve so much more than we currently provide in the way of pay and resources. After all, they are helping to shape the future of our world. As parents, we need to advocate for better conditions for teachers and help them by teaching our kids to respect and work WITH their teachers instead of causing them problems.

  • Are We Too Connected? | The Long Way Home
    Oct 4 2024

    Send me a message!

It seems like everything is online these days. From job applications to shopping, even just grabbing a burger for lunch almost requires the use of an app to make it as easy as possible. And the more that things are connected, the more we are glued to our phones, bringing down the quality of other entertainment as companies realize you're going to be staring at your screen while their show/movie plays in the background anyway, so why bother upping the quality?

Now, the internet and cell phones in general provide a lot of benefits to society. Having a daughter who's now driving on her own, I can appreciate the ability to call her or for her to be able to reach me quickly in an emergency. There's also a long list of ways technology makes life more convenient. But it's also important to take some personal responsibility and learn how to use it to our benefit rather than detriment.

  • What Happened to all the Good Music? | The Long Way Home
    Sep 30 2024

    Send me a message!

Most people, when asked, would probably agree that the best time for music was anywhere from the 1970's to the 1990's. Most of the music today just seems so over-processed, like it came off a conveyor belt.

In this episode of The Long Way Home, I talk about why music today is so watered down, how my taste in music evolved and how the meaning of songs today is much different and completely misses the point of trying to make a point.

  • Just How Dead is the Internet? | The Long Way Home
    Sep 27 2024

    Send me a message!

The dead internet theory has been batted around a lot over the past few years, but no one really takes it seriously. The idea that most of the new content online is made by, and reacted to by, bots seems far fetched to say the least, but could it actually be true?

In this episode of The Long Way Home, I delve into the rising level of fake stuff showing up online and talk about how we can make it all go away.

  • What is the Secret to Raising Kids? | The Long Way Home
    Sep 23 2024

    Send me a message!

One of the most difficult, important and rewarding things you can do in life is raise a child. There's no instruction manual, and everyone else always knows what you should do and how you should do it a million times better than you do. I don't know how, but I've managed to get at least one of my kids to 18, and the others are closing in on that magical age where we all somehow become "responsible" adults.

In this episode of The Long Way Home, I talk about that journey and what I would have done differently. I also discuss the way my parents did things, and how they could have done them so much better.
