This episode is a continuation from Episode 16.

Ivor takes us through the formation of AFC Wimbledon and their remarkable rise through the Combined Counties League into the Football League.

We skip the usual format to hear from Ivor about how the club was formed, the team names which were discussed, the trials on Wimbledon Common and the pitch invasion after the very first match versus Sutton!

We also hear about the play off final against Luton, a result which got the club into the Football League.

As you may know Wimbledon's ground suffered significant damage following flooding earlier in the week. Ivor talks about the parallels with the Newcastle tie (now moved to St James Park) and the Leeds FA Cup game referenced in Episode 1.

Crowdfunding to support AFC Wimbledon in getting games on following flood damage to the pitch and stadium on JustGiving

Incredible to see the generosity of the football fans with (at the time of writing this) £117,000 raised.

Bad language counter (not that bad really and Ivor did ask permission first but there were a few expletives!):

My latest guest on TLSP was Ivor Heller, a Wimbledon fan since 1972.

Ivor was a great guest and a hugely passionate fan. He recalls the days of Wimbledon in the Southern league and their meteoric rise through the Football league until they reached the First Division in 1986.

In 1988, Wimbledon defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the FA Cup Final at Wembley, although as Ivor says this wasn't as big a shock as people suggested.

A brilliant conversation littered with some great stories, and we are back for more in a few weeks!

My latest guest on TLSP was Mark Scales, a Norwich City fan since 1975.

Mark recalls some of his favourite players in the 50 years of following Norwich and his favourite games and memories. A regular at Carrow Road for many seasons, Mark also talks about his son's spell with the Norwich youth set up.

Mark also covers the current regime and his thoughts on the upcoming campaign.

An honourable mention also for Dale 'Disco' Gordon, with whom Mark enjoyed many a drink with in Tipplers, Great Yarmouth after home matches!

NOTE: 34.45 - 36 mins, some words included in songs which everyone may not approve of but I have left in for effect. I also meant to refer to Chelsea and not Man City in this extract!

  • 14. Patrick Stevens | Crystal Palace
    Aug 16 2024

My latest guest on TLSP was Patrick Stevens, a Crystal Palace fan.

Patrick has supported Palace since the 70's despite growing up in a family who supported Millwall. He has visited Wembley twice for FA Cup finals in 1990 (aged 26) and 2016 (52), both of which resulted in defeats to Manchester United. He looks forward to returning in 2042 when he will be 78!

Patrick is a enthusiastic and passionate fan and talks at length about the Holmesdale Fanatics which really adds to the match day experience of following Palace.

A brilliant episode, listen out for a mention for the Vengaboys!

  • 13. Miles McKinlay | Nottingham Forest
    Aug 2 2024

    Send us a text

My latest guest on TLSP was Miles McKinlay, a Nottingham Forest Fan.

The name McKinlay will be known by most Forest fans - Miles' Grandfather is a Forest legend and played 684 times for the club.

Miles started going to matches in the early 2000s and for the most part it hasn't been a great period for the club with lots of managerial changes and spells outside of the Premier League. He is, however, hopeful the club can establish itself in the top tier having gained promotion a few years ago.

A brilliant episode - with a nod also to the great Forest side in the late 70s/early 80s!

Martin has supported Tottenham since the early 90's and recalls his first match in 1991 and one of his favourites games in 1999 when Tottenham beat Leicester in the League Cup at Wembley.

    Send us a text

With the Euro's almost upon us, this was a great opportunity for me to chat to Dave Tandy, a Swindon Town fan, about his memories of following England home and away.

Dave recalls the great Euro 96 tournament and the memorable 4-1 win versus the Dutch plus more favourite games and players!

There is also an appeal for his missing Swindon Town flag! Come on England!

My final guest of the season was Lewis Davies, a fan of Ipswich Town for as long as he can remember.

Lewis shares his memories of following the tractor boys and as you would expect is thoroughly enjoying the football the team are playing under Kieran McKenna.

Lewis recalls some of his favourite matches and players and a memorable first match back in 2001!
