    It’s Hump Day! And Sam is live from the Mass Torts Conference in Las Vegas! First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the build of Hurricane Milton as it approaches Florida, Harris’ campaign for the right, Biden’s commitment to Israel, DOJ vs. Google, Trump’s blocking of a Kavanaugh FBI investigation, abortion bans, Boeing machinist’s ongoing labor action, Elons cucking to Lula, the ever-crumbling Eric Adams Administration, and the GOP’s mass investment in anti-trans attacks, before parsing a little more thoroughly through the impending threat of Hurricane Milton. After touching on the important distinction between mass torts and class action lawsuits, Sam is joined by Attorney Kim Adams with Levin Pappantonio to discuss her ongoing litigation against the Canadian porn company formerly known as MindGeek (now Aylo) for encouraging, facilitating, and helping to disseminate child pornography on their site, unpacking the law (Section 230) that protects platforms from legal liability for third-party content and the tension between that and the active production, curation, boosting, and highlighting of said liable content, not to mention the heightened responsibility for pornography companies to be aware of the content the platform and sponsor. After expanding on the extensive community of impacted parties, be they plaintiffs or potential class members, and exploring the distinction between hosting and publishing, Adams summarizes the case’s state right now. Next, Andy Birchfield from Beasley Allen joins, diving right into the ever-ongoing case against Johnson & Johnson for their manufacturing, sale, and promotion of their Talc-based baby powder formula despite internal awareness of the presence of asbestos and the devastating medical impact it can have on mothers and their children, with a particular focus on J&J knowingly marketing this toxic powder as a feminine hygiene product and the resulting development of ovarian cancer amongst consumers. Next, Birchfield dives deep into J&J’s implementation of the “Texas Two-Step” legal maneuver to avoid responsibility, splitting off all of its liabilities from its assets into a separate company, before immediately moving said company to the asbestos-liability haven of North Carolina, where it would attempt to declare bankruptcy and render any attempts at accountability or compensation null. Walking through the circle of attrition that this has created in the courts, as we enter a third attempt to declare bankruptcy, Andy and Sam wrap up with the future of this case and the role public pressure, congressional legislation, and the questionable morals of J&J leadership all play in hopefully bringing this to a close. Sam and Emma also expand on the developing story about the Trump White House’s obstruction of an FBI investigation into Brett Kavanaugh’s allegations of sexual assault. Then she speaks with Rakan Abed El Rahman, correspondent at the National News stationed in the Gaza Strip, to discuss what it has been like reporting on the Israel/Gaza conflict since October 7th of last year. First, Emma runs through updates on today’s voter registration deadlines, Israel’s decimation of Gaza, the IDF’s failing invasion of Southern Lebanon, Blinken’s role in approving the IDF’s bombing of aid trucks in Gaza, France’s military aid to Israel, the Harris campaign, SCOTUS, Biden’s immigration policy, and the impending Hurricane Milton, before parsing through Elon Musk’s simultaneously cringeworthy and genuinely concerning appearance at Trump’s rally in PA. Professor Ilan Pappé then joins, diving right into the rapid escalation and exacerbation of Israeli society and the Israeli state’s genocidal desires, first tackling the clear signs of the citizenry’s right-wing turn and the Netanyahu Administration’s messianic nature in the wake of the 2022 elections, before unpacking his thoughts on how the rapid radicalization during Israel’s brutal ethnic cleansing of Gaza (now expanded into a regional conflict) has exposed extensive cracks in the state of Israel. After briefly touching on the role of Israeli’s backlash to Netanyahu’s fascistic judiciary reforms – and the particular dearth of any connection between the violence imposed on Palestinians and the fascism coming home to roost – in demonstrating the precarious state of the country, Professor Pappé steps back to explore this evolution as a natural progression of right-wing colonial ideology in direct conflict with the world it’s invading, bolstered by Israel’s proactive violence in stamping out any conditions for change. Ilan then walks Sam and Emma through the evolution of the super-alliance that backs the Zionist state, exploring the movement’s roots in an Evangelical Christian movement that sought to capitalize on anti-Semitic sentiment and the growing aims of the British Empire, putting together an overwhelmingly powerful coalition before the Jewish community even came to the fore, also looking at the incredible evolution of the Zionist lobby in the United States and how Israel’s ability to stamp out conditions for change extends well beyond its border. After expanding on the ever-growing international backlash to Israel’s genocidal apartheid regime, Pappé dives deep into the need to recenter Palestinian actors in this fight, and what must be done to achieve decolonization in the region as quickly and with as little violence as possible. Rakan Abed El Rahman then looks to the ongoing devastation Israel is inflicting on the Gaza Strip, unpacking the ever-rising death toll, the debilitating material and mental conditions, and the complete decimation of civilian sectors in the region, before stepping back to outline how very real (while certainly less extreme) all of those issues were *prior* to October 7th of last year. Expanding on this, El Rahman walks Emma through the near-total nature of Israel’s reign of terror in Gaza since Hamas’ attack last October, even in contrast with Israel’s other major offensives against Gaza over the last two decades, before wrapping up by sharing his (and others’) experiences of Israel’s explicit and targeted terrorizing of journalists and medical personnel, and the insane need for the West (and Israel) to recognize Palestinians as humans rather than terrorists. After expanding on the role of the US in bolstering instability and insecurity in the region to secure their influence, Adam wraps up by unpacking the evolution of OPEC and its role as a supposedly decolonial institution headed by a major US-ally and authoritarian regime in Saudi Arabia. Greg Stoker and Emma tackle the rapid expansion of Israel’s ongoing military campaign into a full-scale regional conflict, with Israel launching a full-scale terror campaign across Lebanon before advancing a typically collectively punitive bombing campaign against Hezbollah personnel, as well this week’s Iran-launched barrage on Tel Aviv. Stoker continues, tackling the glaring parallels between Israel’s ongoing invasion of Lebanon and their complete failure in the 2006 war, parsing through the difficulties Israel faces in constantly warring with decentralized guerrilla factions, and exploring Israel’s potential responses to Iran’s controlled assault.     Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speaks with Manisha Sinha, Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut, to discuss her recent book The Rise and Fall of the Second American Republic: Reconstruction, 1860-1920. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the major death toll coming out of Lebanon, the sending of US forces and aid to support Israel, US airstrikes in Syria, Hurricane Helene’s death toll and destruction, presidential polling, Gavin Newsome’s pro-Private Equity and Big Tech moves, labor news, Eric Adams’ legal woes, and the passing of Kris Kristofferson, before reading a message from Matt Strackbein AKA The Letterhack on the devastation of Hurricane Helene. Professor Manisha Sinha then joins, diving right into the major expansion of the typical Reconstruction time frame in her work, with the 1865-77 period failing to incorporate the initial challenge for interracial democracy in the South or the decades of challenges to the progressive project of Reconstruction that were required to overthrow this effort fully, and exploring the mythologizing of this era as an abject “failure” and the “Lost Cause” revisionist history that plays into. Expanding on the importance of understanding the project to unwind Reconstruction, Professor Sinha tackles the role of the Gilded Age and the late 19th Century revolution in Industrial Capitalism in pushing a shift in the Republican Party from Lincoln to anti-labor, laisse-faire liberal Republicans aligned with southern capitalists, all but abandoning the abolitionist project, stepping back from the South as domestic racial terror campaigns and targeted political violence ran wild. After touching on the particular crackdown on the public and civic institutions in the South – via both state and vigilante violence – and expanding on the role of economic populism in bolstering the white supremacist project against Reconstruction, Manisha walks Sam and Emma through the direct relationship between the anti-Black and anti-democratic violence of the era and the then-ongoing project of imperialist expansion and the genocide of Native Americans. Wrapping up, Professor Sinha tackles the glaring parallels with today’s fight for democracy and against White Supremacy, particularly regarding party politics and the Supreme Court, and centers the importance of knowing what you’re fighting against. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma dive into the obscene, excessive, and indiscriminate nature of Israel’s bombardment of Beirut and assassination of Hassan Nasrallah, and watch the Foreign Minister of Jordan respond to Bibi’s UN speech.
