    • Dr. Shirley Ann Jackson is indeed recognized as the first Black woman to earn a PhD from MIT, and her research in physics significantly contributed to the development of technologies like touch-tone dialing, caller ID, and call waiting, even though she may not be credited as the sole inventor of each specific feature; her work laid the groundwork for these advancements in telecommunications.
    • Frederick J. Loudin invented the Keychain in 1894.
    • The Lemon Squeezer was Invented by John White, December 8, 1896
    • John Thomas White invented the lemon squeezer for the purpose of efficiently making his own lemonade instead of buying it
    • Meet Mark E. Dean, one of the brilliant minds behind the invention that changed the world!
    • He co-invented the IBM personal computer in the early 1980s. The IBM PC was introduced in August 1981.
    • Madam C.J. Walker created a line of haircare products for African American women, leading her to later become the first female African American self-made millionaire.
    • There is now a Netflix series based upon her journey, titled Self Made.
    • Gabby Douglas became the first Black gymnast to win the Individual All Around in the 2012 London Olympics.
    • On April 5, 1947, Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play Major League Baseball when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers. He led the league in stolen bases that season and was named Rookie of the Year.
    • Before Oprah Winfrey and Michael Jordan joined the billionaire’s club, Robert Johnson became the first African American billionaire when he sold the cable station

    • In 2008, Barack Obama became the first Black president of the United States.

  • Black History Month Spotlight - Hattie McDaniel, Halle Berry, Denzel Washington, Sidney Poitier

    • On March 24, 2002, Halle Berry becomes the first Black woman to win the Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of a struggling widow who falls in love with her husband’s death row executioner in Monster’s Ball. Before Berry, the only African American actress to win an Academy Award was Hattie McDaniel, who earned the statuette for her supporting role in 1939’s Gone With the Wind as Mammy.
    • At the Oscar ceremony, McDaniel and her guest had to sit at a segregated table. When Hattie McDaniel took the stage at the 12th Academy Awards in 1940, she was the only Black woman in the room. The same night Berry won her historic Oscar, Denzel Washington became only the second Black man to win in the Best Actor category, for his role as a corrupt Los Angeles police officer in Training Day. It was the first time at the Academy Awards that Black performers had taken home both of the year’s top acting awards.
    • And Sidney Poitier shattered racial barriers in Hollywood, becoming the first Black actor to win an Academy Award for Best Actor in 1964 for Lilies of the Field.

    • Dr. Rebecca Crumpler was the first African American woman to earn an M.D. degree. YEAR. 1883.
    • Carter G. Woodson, a groundbreaking historian and Harvard alum, is known as the father of Black history.
    • Alexander Miles invented the automatic elevator door system, which made elevators safer to ride.
    • Stevie Wonder's Innervisions is considered a significant album in Black history because it was the first time a Black artist won the Grammy for Album of the Year.
    • The oldest Black female Greek-letter organization, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (AKA), was founded at Howard University in 1908.
    • Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is the first Black Greek letter organization. In 1906.

    • Garrett Morgan invented an early version of the traffic light. In 1916, he patented a “safety hood,” a breathing device that protected miners and firefighters. His traffic light was patented in 1923 and eventually sold for $40,000 to General Electric. #BHM
    • Philip B. Downing designed a metal box with four legs which he patented on October 27, 1891. He called his device a street letter box and it is the predecessor of today’s mailbox.
    • Martin Luther King Jr, entered Morehouse as an early-admission student at the age of 15 in 1944 and graduated in 1948 as a man ready to change the nation.
    • In 1958 Ailey founded the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater to present his vision of honoring Black culture through dance.
    • WNBA Black History Spotlight Sheryl Swoopes was the first player signed to the WNBA .
