  • Pete O'Hanlon Chats About How Being In The Strypes Taught Him To Take A Different Approach To Music
    Nov 11 2020
As part of a 'That Was Then This Is Now' special, Pete O'Hanlon of The Zen Arcade joined Paul on the show to talk about their first single, and the life lessons learned with The Strypes. This time around, the lads in The Zen Arcade are taking a different approach. They had planned to build up a fanbase via live shows but 2020 had other plans, so when that option was removed they started a podcast and released a zine before they even released a debut single. Pete spoke about the pressure that was there in The Strypes because they left school for the band, so they all felt that they really had to make it work. This time is different however, and not having a big label involved brings a sense of freedom to their decisions. The Zen Arcade were recording music when Level 5 kicked in but they hope to have a follow up to 'Don't Say A Word' for us in the next few months. • Josh McClorey On Working With Weller And Life After The Strypes
    Oct 22 2020
This Friday, Josh McClorey will release his second solo single 'Crazy', and it's not what you would expect a Josh McClorey track to sound like. Josh caught up with Paul for a chat about creating music in his shed in Cavan, and what he learned from working with Paul Weller. After being based in a band for so long and writing music collectively, the former Strypes guitarist has found that when left to his own devices and being surrounded by computers, his music has taken on a different sound. Josh also told Paul about how singing became a huge thing when writing his new music because for the first time he couldn't hide behind someone else's vocals or blend in. He said it feels more exposed to be the sole vocalist but he has started looking at it as an instrument. Working with Paul Weller on his last three albums have taught Josh a lot too, he spoke about Weller's attitude to work and how when he's in the studio he never takes breaks and is involved in every aspect of the session. You can look forward to two new singles from Josh this year, and he's hoping to have an EP released early next year. You can hear the chat in full by pressing the play button on screen.

  • Róisín Murphy Chats About Her New Album And What The Future Holds
    Oct 7 2020
Fresh from the release of her fifth studio album 'Róisín Machine', Róisín Murphy caught up with Paul to chat all about the sound of the album, and what the future holds. 'Róisín Machine' was ten years in the making and sees Róisín team up with her long-time collaborator Parrot. While she says you can skip through and pick out certain tracks, the album really benefits from being listened to in one uninterrupted sitting. She's spent lockdown working on the next couple of projects, but Róisín is not sure about music after that. She is very interested in pursuing her fascination with faces and venturing into film. One thing Róisín is sure of is that we will find a way to have live music back again in the next 12 months, and once we're back in the room we'll forget all about what's outside the door.
