• When in Rome
    May 28 2021

This week we visit Nubo in Alexandria, NSW and examine why even in an ultra-controlled environment, parent anxiety is still at an ultimate high,

We discuss the effects of being in a sterile-like environment and how it contributes to the way modern parents are choosing to raise their kids.

We consider why parents feel the need to micro manage their child’s active play, without focussing on whether it’s of their interest, developmental stage or even age appropriate.

We reflect of the demographics and psychographics of the modern parent and wonder why there is a lot of uncertainty in the way to raise children and support their development.

We also ask, what are children actually getting out of spending time in these sorts of playgrounds?

  • Phones in the Playground
    May 20 2021

This week we visit Lardelli Park in Putney NSW and examine phone use in the playground.

We discuss the effects phone use, in the playground, has on children AND their parents and the ways that the distraction has altered the emotional state of parents and caregivers.

We consider why parents feel the need to capture every moment of their child’s life and how this impacts the body image and self esteem of our children.

We way up the pros and cons of phone use in the playground and discuss how complex topics such as phone use, need to be questioned and reflected on, in order to be a purposeful & conscious parent.

We ask, if we’re not sure why we do things, such as overuse of our phones with our children, then why do we keep doing it?

  • PR in the Playground
    May 5 2021
This week we visit Top Ryde Shopping Centre playground (Playzone) in Top Ryde NSW and examine public relations in the playground.     We discuss the micro management of children’s emotions and social interactions, in the playground, by their parents and why they feel the need to manage their child’s public relations.   We consider why parents focus a lot on how their child will appear to others and why their “brand” is more important than child led emotional & social development.    We look at the impact this has on children’s ability to self regulate and further understand more complex emotions such as embarrassment, guilt, shame and frustration.    We also look at the impact this kind of parenting has on the parents themselves, increasing levels of dissatisfaction and resentment in their parenting journey.   We ask, why are we holding our children to a higher standard, than ourselves, when it comes to emotional maturity?

  • Hoverboarding
    May 4 2021

This week we visit ELS Hall Park in Marsfield NSW and examine hoverboarding in parents and care givers.

We discuss why this is a growing trend and why parents feel the need to hover over their children around the playground.

We also consider the emotional reasons behind hovering and what it's actually doing to their children’s development.

We look at the impact hovering also has on the mental health of children and how this will affect their self esteem long term, well into their teen years.

We ask, if you’re not letting your child be independent now, then when?

    Apr 20 2021

This week we visit Inglis Park in Randwick NSW and examine slide etiquette.

We look at how children interact and negotiate taking turns on a slide and what this does to their cognitive development.

We also consider how when parents attempt to guide their children through the slide activity, are they intervening on the natural development of motor, social and emotional skills of young children.

We ask, should the parenting focus be on manners or self agency?
