In this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, your hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas get into some monkey madness, as they talk about two big blockbusters involving lots and lots of apes!

First up, Jonathan unveils his beef with the latest GODZILLA x KONG movie. Then, we get into a film series near and dear to Fil's heart, as we chat KINGDOM OF THE PLANET OF THE APES. We dive into the highs and the lows of the film, the greater franchise as a whole, and what we could see from future instalments.

Of course, as with most of these episodes about new films, we start complaining about the state of Hollywood and how we are stuck in sequel, reboot, prequel, legacy sequel hell. But, what are you gonna do? Hollywood gives you big ape movies. You go see them!

"Are you familiar with the concept of evolution? In their time, humans were capable of many great things. They could fly, like eagles fly. They could speak across oceans. But now, it is our time... and it is my kingdom. We will learn. Apes will learn. I will learn. And I... will conquer."

  • Brotherly Love 5 - Intolerable Cruelty vs Stuck On You
    Jun 12 2024

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the final episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we have been pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. We skip ahead to the year 2003 for the final bout, where the Coen Brothers took a crack at directing a writer-for-hire script, the rom-com INTOLERABLE CRUELTY, and the Farrelly Brothers got stuck on brotherhood with the conjoined twin comedy STUCK ON YOU.

With Intolerable Cruelty the Coens teamed back up with George Clooney, who plays hot shot divorce attorney Miles Massey. Massey is known for his patented pre-nuptial agreement, that is known to be impenetrable. After assisting a cheating husband, millionaire Rex Rexroth (Edward Herrmann), in preventing his wife Marilynn (Catherine Zeta Jones) from getting any of her husband's wealth in their divorce, Miles finds himself a victim of a sophisticated revenge plot orchestrated by Marilynn. The only problem is, Miles falls for Marilynn, clouding his vision, and opening him up to her wrath. It's not quite the cutting film that we're used to from the Coens, but it has some sweet moments, great chemistry from the leads, and some really great and shocking moments. Is it enough to take down the Farrellys?

It's a tough order this month, as the Farrellys churned out one of their low-key best films in 2003 with Stuck On You. Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear star as conjoined twins Bob and Walt Tenor, who live in Martha's Vineyard. Bob is into sports and loves the simple life of cooking food at their restaurant in Massachusetts. Walt on the other hand is hoping to become a big time actor. The brothers venture out to Hollywood to allow Walt a chance at fame, when they are discovered by Cher (you know, Cher), who casts Walt to be the co-star in her new TV show – hoping that the network will pull the plug on the show. However, Walt turns out to be a huge hit, causing the brothers to consider their future stuck together. The film is riddled with cameos, such as Meryl Streep, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Diaz, Luke Wilson Frankie Muniz and even JESSE VENTURA!!! You may think we are joking when saying it's one of their best films, but this truly is a sweet, funny, and underrated film from the Farrellys. Give it a go if you don't believe us.

We're back to pondering what the alien agenda really is, and it appears we may be closer to cracking the code. According to Whitley Strieber, they appear to just be looking out for our health; making sure we aren't eating too many chocolates and getting the diabetes. Now that chocolate is off the menu, how will we fill the massive void in our hearts and stomachs? Just when you think we're down for the count, we hear there is a new M. Night Shyamalan trailer making the rounds...

  • Bruce Wills Us – 16 Blocks w/ Chevy Mclaren (PREVIEW)
    May 22 2024

This is a sample clip from our Patreon feed. If you'd like to hear this episode in its entirety and more episodes like it, subscribe for as little as $1 per month over at patreon.com/thepccpodcast

In this bonus edition of The Pod Charles Cinecast, your hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas are back with a Brucie Bonus, with the return of BRUCE WILLS US – a bonus series where we occasionally dip into the films of Bruce Willis. And this time, we are joined by special guest, cinema Duty Manager and Filmmaker, and Bruce Willis fanboy Chevy Mclaren – talking Richard Donner's 2006 action thriller, 16 BLOCKS, starring Bruce Willis and Mos Def.

Bruce Willis plays ageing alcoholic cop, Jack Mosley, who is assigned the task of escorting a witness, Mos Def as Eddie Bunker, from police custody to a courthouse 16 blocks away. There are, however, chaotic forces at work, aka stupid Cops man, that prevent them from making it in one piece.

It's like a Die Hard movie, where a very normal cop has to go above and beyond to save the day, but it is even more compounded by this being the most broken down Bruce Willis you've ever seen. It's probably the Die Hard movie we should have got instead of Die Hard 4.0, but c'est la vie – we had to see Bruce jump off the wing of a jet plane.

So, get your alcoholic beverage of choice at the ready, and get prepared to travel 16 blocks with us, and this underrated gem of the mid-2000s.

"Days change, seasons change, people don't change."

  • Brotherly Love 4 - O Brother, Where Art Thou? vs Me, Myself & Irene
    May 15 2024

This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, it's the penultimate episode of the monthly miniseries – BROTHERLY LOVE – where we are pitting some films from filmmaking brothers the Coen Brothers vs. the Farrelly Brothers. This month, we hit the road in the year 2000, with two films featuring people looking to clear their name. It's Joel & Ethan Coen's folk musical comedy O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? and Peter & Bobby Farrelly's dark comedy ME, MYSELF & IRENE.

In O Brother, Where Art Thou?, George Clooney stars as Ulysses Everett McGill, a criminal who convinces two fellow convicts (Tim Blake Nelson and John Turturro) to break out of prison to seek treasure he left buried from a previous job. Turns out he really just wants to stop his wife (Holly Hunter) from getting remarried. Along their journey, they meet a young black musician who sold his soul to the devil, and cut a hit record together. They also meet a cyclops, sirens, and countless others in this unique adaptation of Homer's The Odyssey. With more brilliant cinematography from Roger Deakins, a tremendous soundtrack featuring loads of old folk, gospel, and bluegrass standards, and quality performances all around, this is another winner for Joel and Ethan Coen. Can they ever be stopped?

The Farrelly Brothers can attempt to do so with their road comedy Me, Myself & Irene, starring Jim Carrey in his first film with the Farrelly's since Dumb and Dumber. Carrey, who was just coming off starring in back-to-back serious roles (The Truman Show and Man on the Moon) returned to the gross-out comedy as Charlie Baileygates, a Rhode Island state trooper who develops a split personality. Charlie must escort Irene (Renée Zellweger) to New York, where she is wanted for hit-and-run. The pair are then forced to go on the lam to avoid Irene's mafia-connected ex-boyfriend, whilst Charlie is also trying to suppress his new alter-ego, Hank. Some of this one holds up, but it is pretty much relying on a very wrongfully depicted mental illness – so take that for what you will. Is it enough to topple the sweet tunes of O Brother? We'll let you decide...

Which brother will win Brotherly Love, and be crowned the best brother filmmaking duo of the 90s? Tune in to find out...

  • BREADCRUMBS – Bad Dates After Hours
    May 8 2024

What's the worst date you've ever been on? Nothing can be worse than a date that never ends, and turns into a series of terrible dates, much like the fortunes of Griffin Dunne in Martin Scorsese's AFTER HOURS. My guy was stuck in dating purgatory. But, that is a movie. It can't possibly be that bad in real life, right? Leave it up to some Star Wars fans to prove that wrong...
